What is a "Just Right" Book?
A book that fits a child's reading ability. There are several tools that can assist in selecting a “just right book.” Lexiles, (Lexile.com) as indicated by SRA tests, NWEA tests and other standardized measures are one way to match readers to books. Book lexiles are derived from sentence and word length.
Students also use the “Five Finger Rule.” Students open a book to a middle page and put up a finger for every word they miss. No fingers indicates the book is too easy, five fingers means its too hard for now. 1-3 fingers up means the book is just right!
Many parents want to know how to encourage their child’s reading.
•Read- Research shows that children read more if their parents are readers.
•Read Aloud -Even when children are independent readers, continue to read to them aloud. By reading books slightly out of their ability range, their own skills and vocabulary will grow. Take turns reading. There’s magic generated when the printed word is spoken aloud.
•Read Anything- Comics, newspapers, and the back of the cereal box all count as reading! Encourage your children to select books that they find interesting. Their reading interest and ability will soar.
