LRC News 9/16/16
On Thursday, September 15, the fourth graders at Glen Grove had an amazing time with Liesl Shurtliff, author of Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin, Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk and Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood. Shurtliff worked with two classes at a time to discuss the elements of character and plot to develop their own stories. During the writers’ workshops, students were given time to write and share their versions of the group story. Thanks to the PTA, this visit comes at the perfect time as the fourth graders are focusing on narrative in the classroom.

Literacy Night was a big success thanks to the many volunteers: both parents and teachers that helped at the event. A special thank you to Allison Elias, Margie Carr and Stacie Brown for dedicating countless hours to provide the families of Glen Grove School this wonderful new event. We had 184 students attend with their families. The generous PTA was able to donate 100 books to the Glen Grove Library thanks to the profits from the book sales at the event. We can’t wait to host the second annual Family Literacy Night next fall!
The third graders enjoyed the visit on October 5th from non-fiction author, Suzanne Slade. Ms. Slade focused her presentation on researching ecosystems since she has written numerous books on the topic that compliment the Next Generation Science Standards.

The month of your child’s birthday, a letter will go home explaining the process of donating a book to the collection in his/her name. Summer birthdays are celebrated at the end of the school year for the months of June and July and at the beginning for the month of August. Back to school means library books are coming home again! Students may check out 2 books for 2 weeks. They are welcome to return their books before the 2 weeks or renew them for another 2 weeks. If a student forgets a book, then he or she can check out 1 book until the second is returned. If a student forgets to bring both books back, he/she will not be able to check out until one or both books are returned. Why is this? At Glen Grove School, we want students to be responsible for their materials. Overdue books will not be fined. If a student can’t find a missing book, we ask that he/she pay for the missing book. If the book is found later, we are happy to refund the money.
Students never have to have an overdue book again! They can check anytime and on any device, what books they have checked out just by logging into the Alexandria Catalog. First go the Glen Grove School website and click on the Alexandria (drop down) tab found at the top of the page. Click on login and typing the student’s username (ex: l_funke) and then their password, which is their last name (ex: funke). Finally, click on the Activity Tab (at the top) and then the titles checked out and due dates are shown below.
