For this exam, compose an essay answering one of the questions below. You must show an understanding of the material presented in class as well as your textbook and documents by directly citing information. The paper should be approximately 5 pages in length and must be typed, double-spaced. Your answer should include correct grammar, syntax, organization and referencing.
The exam is due by 5pm on 23 February in my box in Center Street House. Late work will be penalized 10 points per day, except in cases of extended illness or a family emergency.

1. One of the most controversial aspects of World War I is the origins of the war. For this essay, (a) discuss the variety of reasons why World War I occurred and (b) of the reasons you examined section a, decide which one you believe was the most important or influential in pushing Europe towards war in 1914.
2. World War I in many ways differed from the wars of the 19th century, both in the style of fighting and in the move towards total war. (a)Discuss the changing nature of war during World War I and its impact. (b) What is it about World War I that shifted military strategy towards total war ?
3. Russia underwent tremendous transformation between 1917 and the end of the 1930's. Discuss the most important successes and failures during this period (Current Modern Russia students may not choose this question)
4. By the mid-1930's, Wilson's dream of self determination and a democratic Europe was dead. Why was Europe unable to establish stable democratic states? Why by 1938/39 had most of the major European nations except for England and France turned to more dictatorial regimes?
