We recently held one of my favorite activities here in the library - STORIES AROUND THE CAMPFIRE!! It's so fun to take the journey in our imaginations to other times and places. This year, students left the city and went deep into the woods to camp or went back in time to hear traditional stories told by a village elder (that would be me!!)
Here's what we did, specifically, in each grade level:
Kindergarten listened to stories about camping the first week, and we had traditional tales like the Three Billy Goats Gruff the second week.
First grade heard chain tales from around the world the first week. The second week, they heard “The Hedley Kow” from England and a variant of “The Bremen Town Musicians” from Ireland called “Jack and His Comrades.”
Second grade enjoyed folktales – “King Hairy Goat Ears,” a South Slavic fairy tale, and “The Monkey, The Dog, and the Carabao” from the Philippines.
Third grade compared Cinderella stories and discussed the cultural significance of each one.
Fourth graders heard “spooky” stories and learned about the cultural significance of them.
