2nd Grade Voice Lessons

I am so excited that I got to work with 2nd grade on using voice in their writing! It brought me back to my days as a 4th grade teacher!

We read poems from Grumbles from the Forest: Fairy-Tale Voices with a Twist by Jane Yolen and Rebecca Kai Dotlich, and students decided which fairy tale character was telling the poem. They had a great time figuring out which character's perspective in which each poem was told!

Once students were engaged, we moved on to The Secret Knowledge of Grown-ups by David Wisniewski. The second graders loved the "truth" as to why parents make us eat our vegetables and comb their hair! Once we read a few examples, students brainstormed other rules parents made for them and then wrote the "truth" as to why grownups made them follow the rules.
