Since science is a tested subject in 5th grade, we put a lot of focus into spiraling review with all of the essential TEKS standards from their K-5 years, as well as heavily focusing on vocabulary.
Some classes cover vocabulary with the Frayer Model, while others will complete vocabulary flash cards. We encourage you to review the vocabulary terms from each unit with your student for 10 minutes a night, but there will not be homework sent home over these topics/terms.
If you need access to the vocabulary words at home, please contact your student's science teacher, and they will be able to share these with you!
These vocab words will be tested in our unit quizzes at the end of each topic, so please make sure that your student feels comfortable with them towards the end of each unit.
There are 4 main categories that science curriculum is broken up into: Physical Science, Earth and Space, Organisms and Environments, and then responding to data (following the STAAR test).
Physical Science includes properties of matter, density, mixtures, solutions, conductors/insulators of thermal/electrical energy, uses of energy, circuits, lights reflection/refraction, and the effects of force on an object.
Earth and Space includes weathering, erosion, deposition, landforms, formation of sedimentary rocks, fossil fuels, sun and ocean interaction in the water cycle, weather and climate, and the cause of day/night.
Organisms and Environments includes organisms in their ecosystems, flow of energy, changes in ecosystems, fossils as evidence of past living organisms, and the structures/functions of plants/animals.
