COURSE DESCRIPTION
Science 30 is a 5 credit course. This course is designed to help students better understand and apply the basic fundamental concepts and skills relating to the study of Living Systems Respond to Their Environment, Chemistry and the Environment, Electromagnetic Energy, Energy and the Environment
. The course will be presented in the following sequence:
Unit 1: Energy, Equilibrium, Matter and Systems
· analyze how the human circulatory system facilitates interaction between blood cells and the external environment and investigate cardiovascular health
· analyze the defense mechanisms used by the human body to protect itself from pathogens found in the external environment
· apply the principles of heredity and molecular genetics to explain how human diseases can arise from inherited traits, the risks and benefits of genetic technology, and the need for ethical considerations in the application of scientific knowledge.
Unit 2: Chemistry and the Environment
· analyze the sources of acids and bases and their effects on the environment
· analyze the sources of organic compounds and their effects on the environment
· analyze, from a variety of perspectives, the risks and benefits of using chemical processes in meeting human needs and assess technologies for reducing the impact of chemical compounds on the environment.
Unit 3: Electromagnetic Energy
· explain field theory and analyze its applications in technologies used to produce, transmit and transform electrical energy
· describe the properties of the electromagnetic spectrum and their applications in medical technologies, communication systems and remote-sensing technologies used to study the universe.
Unit 4: Energy and the Environment
· explain the need for balancing the growth in global energy demands with maintaining a viable biosphere
· describe the sun as Earth’s main source of energy and explain the functioning of some conventional and alternative
Labs: Labs are very important to the understanding of science and are only done once due to the time for set up, large size of the class and cost of materials. If a student misses a lab they will still be responsible to know the material cover but will missed the hands on experience. Labs are not posted on google classroom.
As there is currently only five students in this classwork will be module based and sublimated with labs and other assignments.
Extra Help: Is available Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 2:49 to 3:30
Cell Phones/ Ear Buds: Students must adhere to school’s electronic policy. Policy
Calculators: on phones are not to be used in class as they are not allowed to be used on quizzes or tests. A TI30 or higher is required to do the calculations in class. It is important that student use the same model calculator in class as they do on quizzes or tests as different models have different operations to get the correct answer.
Test Dates: These are subject to change but usually only change by a day or 2
