Course Outline

The Alberta Mathematics curriculum for Grade 9 is divided into four sections called strands. The four strands are as follows:

1. Number

2. Shape and Space

3. Patterns and Relations

4. Statistics and Probability

These strands are divided into nine chapters in the Math Makes Sense student textbook. The Grade 9 curriculum objectives of each strand are covered within the student text. The tentative outline is as follows:

• 1. Powers and Exponential Laws (Chapter 2)

  2. Square Roots (Chapter 1)

  3. Rational Numbers (Chapter 3)

  4. Polynomials (Chapter 5)

  5. Linear Equations and Inequalities (Chapter 6)

  6. Linear Relations (Chapter 4)

  7. Similarity and Transformations (Chapter 7)

  8. Circle Geometry, Surface Area (Chapter 8, Chapter 1)

  9. Probability and Statistics (Chapter 9)

Goals

The main goals of Mathematics education are to prepare students to:

• • Use mathematics confidently to solve problems within our daily lives

  • Communicate and reason mathematically

  • Appreciate and value mathematics

  • Commit to lifelong learning and become mathematically literate adults

Evaluation

75% semester work. Term marks are cumulative. The grade will be broken down as follows:

• • 20% Assignments, Mental Math, Quizzes, Homework

  • 80% Regularly Scheduled Exams (usually 1 per unit) and Cumulative Tests

25% end of year assessment (PAT)

Extra Math Help

Students are encouraged to attend tutorial if they need extra help from 11:30 to 12:00 every school day.

Materials:

• • A binder with notes and paper

  • Pencil & sharpener (or preferably mechanical pencil), eraser

  • Textbook

  • Scientific Calculator

How to Succeed:

• • Come to class with the materials required

  • Record notes and examples, share in discussion and ask questions!

  • Expect homework every day. You must practice the skills taught in class to be successful. Time will be given in class if lessons are done, so use your time effectively!

  • In-class quizzes will be given periodically.

  • Exams (end of unit assessment) will be given at the conclusion of each unit and will be scheduled well in advance.

Absences:

If you are away from school or anticipate being away it is your responsibility to let the school know and catch up on the work missed.

Course exprctations: All students are to follow the rules and guidelines set out by the Alberta School Act – Section 12

That means:

• • The two R’s – Respect and Responsibility

    • You are responsible and held accountable for your actions and your decisions; therefore you are responsible for the consequences, good or bad.

    • Disrespect will not be tolerated towards any staff or towards fellow classmates. Any disrespect will be dealt with promptly and swiftly.

• Attendance is mandatory and will have a profound effect on your mark

• Any student absent unexcused, the day of quizzes or tests will be given a zero on the particular quiz or test.

• Any student missing a test or quiz (excusable absence) must make arrangements to write the missed test on the day that they return to school. These must be written on your own time, NOT during class time.

• It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve any missing assignments, notes, etc, from a fellow classmate or from their teacher if they are absent.

• No assignments will be accepted after FIVE DAYS or if the assignment has been returned to the class.
