Art 1 Course Philosophy: This course is designed as an introductory course, where students observe and explore hands on with various art forms and techniques. Design principles and art fundamentals will be practiced and demonstrated through drawing, painting, and experimentation with various 2-D and 3-D methods.
Art 2 Course Philosophy: This course is a continuation of the principles and technical skills introduced in Art 1. Students will create and present a variety of art projects and will be graded on their demonstration and reflection of skills learned.
Art 3 & 4 Honors Philosophy: These are advanced courses in which students will learn how to use critical thinking concerning their art and works of others. They will create and present a variety of projects and will be graded on their demonstration and reflection of skills learned.
Course Goals: Students are to gain an understanding of art making as a form of:
Expression, Historical Record, Means of Communication, Creative Outlet, Aesthetic Value, Personal Growth and Development, Perception, Representation of Cultural Awareness
Course Objectives: Students will complete assignments using methods taught in:
Proper use of Media, Techniques, and Processes
Elements and Principles of Design
Relating History and Culture to Artwork
Evaluation and Reflection, Art 2/3/4- Including Group Critique
Identifying Careers in Art, Art 3/4- Researching Careers
Art 3/4- Building Portfolios (both physical and e-portfolios)
Sketchbook:
Students will be required to complete sketchbook assignments worth 20 points each. Assignments are introduced and explained/posted on Google Classroom and due one week from their introduction. It is the responsibility of the student to check Google Classroom for upcoming due dates. **Late sketchbooks may be turned in for a possible 17 points. No entries will be accepted after the current Quarter in which the sketchbook is assigned is over.
Project Requirements
Students will work on the current project during class. Projects will be handed in for grading on the designated due date before the end of the school day. Five (5) points will be deducted from the final project grade for every school day it is late.
Students are given the opportunity to improve their project grades. ONE WEEK from when the project was returned with feedback is provided for students to enhance their piece.
Guidelines for Success Contract
The following guidelines are expectations of general conduct, procedures, and consequences for inappropriate behavior in the classroom. This contract must be signed and turned in before continuing with this class.
Expectations:
Show respect towards each other, the teacher, materials/supplies, and yourself
Conduct yourself in a mature manner, not creating distractions
Be responsible
Put forth effort
Behavioral Routines:
Be on time and ready to work.
All materials, homework, and additional supplies and/or resources need to be present at the beginning of class.
Noise level must be held at a minimum. Quiet visiting with your neighbors (at your table only) is allowed during work time, however it is not allowed during lectures, demonstrations, or critiques.
Work as a team to keep our classroom clean and functioning.
Procedures:
Upon entering the classroom, gather your current projects and materials needed and be seated at the bell. *Note: Even if you do not have all of your materials out, you must be in your seat at the bell.
Lecture and explanation of projects will be held at the beginning of each new lesson typically with examples and a PowerPoint.
For many projects, Mrs. Davis will physically demonstrate techniques.
All safety procedures and equipment must be properly used when working with specified materials. (Painting procedures are outlined separately on a later date)
*Paint shirts or smocks should be worn on painting days.
*Cutting boards must be present for any use of the exacto knives.
Supplies must be properly cleaned and returned to the designated storage locations.
Make-up Work
For one (1) day of absence, one school day is given to submit missed work. Five (5) points are deducted each day tardy.
*Special circumstances can be discussed with the teacher PRIOR to the extension deadline.
Consequences for Inappropriate behavior:
If the noise level becomes too loud, expect to be asked to quiet down. If the class has to be reminded a third time, the class will work in silence for the remainder of the period.
Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. Students are expected to generate original ideas and concepts. Work submitted found to be the work of another artist receives an automatic zero.
If you’re being a distraction:
1st Offense is a warning. **Don’t take it personally, it’s to ensure you’re doing your best work and to preserve a peaceful place where others around you can do their best.
2nd Offense- you’ll be asked to move to another table.
3rd Offense- Contact home. If behavior is blatantly disrespectful, a will write up a discipline referral as well.
All policies listed in the school handbook must be followed. Specifically, for the following two warnings will be given, then a write-up:
Food and Drink: Should not be seen, heard, or smelt. Water bottles are fine with a cap/tight lid. NO-OPEN CAN DRINKS!
Cellphones/devices: With permission, may be used to email image references, photograph and submit work on Google Classroom, but should otherwise not be seen or heard.
Automatic write ups:
Deliberate and improper use of supplies. This includes drawing, painting, etc. on another student, their belongings, or yourself and mishandling scissors and exacto knives.
Vandalism: Drawing on/altering another student's work. Deliberate damage to FCHS property/equipment will be considered a criminal offense. Intentional marking, cutting, or writing on the tables is a discipline referral and you will be responsible for its removal.
Grading Policy:
50 % Projects: Projects are completed according to guidelines as listed on their rubrics to include Concept, Creativity, Technical Skill, Craftsmanship, and Participation (10% of all project grades include actively working during class time and effort shown).
25% Sketchbook: Warm-ups, preliminary sketches, exercises, homework assignments
25% Participation: Class activities, explorations/experimentations, written or verbal reflections
Semester Grades are weighted 40% from each quarter and 20% from the midterm/final exam.
Renaissance Card Policy:
One sketchbook assignment (for the year) may be exempted using the “homework pass” on an issued Ren Card. The card must be presented at the time the sketchbook is due!
