My research investigates how chronic stress drives the onset and progression of PCOS, hormone-dependent cancers, and Takotsubo (stress) cardiomyopathy, combining wet-lab gene expression work with in-silico validation. Building on this work, I am transitioning toward stress neurobiology, with a growing interest in how neuroendocrine, immune, and cellular mechanisms mediate the brain–body response to chronic stress and disease.
Primary Project
NR3C1 and ZBTB16 in PCOS: An Alliance to Promote Different Cancers
Can chronic stress act as a hidden regulator of cancer risk, rather than just a byproduct of it?
PCOS, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer share overlapping molecular mechanisms shaped by chronic stress and HPA-axis dysregulation. My research examined two glucocorticoid-pathway genes, NR3C1 and ZBTB16, across clinical samples from all three conditions, finding that ZBTB16 was upregulated in PCOS, slightly elevated in ovarian cancer, and downregulated in breast cancer, with low expression predicting poor prognosis in breast cancer and high expression predicting worse outcomes in ovarian cancer; NR3C1 showed no significant cross-disease difference overall, but correlated with outcomes specifically in breast cancer. Together, these results support chronic stress as a central regulator of PCOS and hormone-driven cancers, pointing to stress-associated pathways as a promising target for early detection and therapy.
Secondary Project
Beyond the Biopsy: A Rare Comparative Case Study of Vulvar Lesions in Adolescent and Elderly Patients
Can molecular-level changes reveal disease before histopathology alone can catch it?
This case study compares two contrasting vulvar lesions to explore that question: a 60-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 5×4 cm fungating vulvar growth and bilateral inguinal lymphadenopathy, histopathologically confirmed as well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, alongside a 22-year-old with a 6×4 cm rubbery, nontender vulvar growth that excisional biopsy confirmed as a benign fibroepithelial lesion. By presenting malignant and benign vulvar pathology side by side across two extremes of age, this work highlights how relying on histopathology alone can miss the molecular changes that precede detectable disease, and argues for combining clinical, histopathological, and molecular evaluation as a more reliable diagnostic approach, particularly in atypical or age-discordant presentations where clinical impression alone can mislead.
