Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Before iterating the gripper further, we are re-evaluating capabilities with the current design and making considerations for alternatives. We are refining
designs on other systems (storage, electrical, translational).
Accomplishments from Previous Week
CADs and designs from the previous week have been refined and are going through the iterative process. We have begun the purchasing process for
several parts of the system.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Decide whether to pursue direct-drive or move to a modified rack and pinion gripper to help increase the reliability of the gripper using tension springs.
Iterate the CADs of the gripper design as follows. (Angela, Alanna)
Make final decisions concerning purchases for translational system and overall wiring. (Manuel, Kieu)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsors preferred 3D printing storage compartment over machining or custom-ordering and gave permission to buy motors for the translational system
as well as other low-cost parts. The sponsors also agreed with choice of silicone tape to increase friction of the gripper.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
The professor raised questions about regulating the motor's output and suggested looking into tension springs. He also mentioned that the current design for the
gripper would not be able to make use of tension springs.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Classmate asked why two separate translational systems would be considered for this task. We have been talking to the sponsor about introducing a cantilever-
based design to the gripper mount of the translational system to reduce the amount to one.
Risks and Areas of Concern
Because of the reduced manufacturing capabilities for this project, we are relying largely on 3D printing. However, the PLA filament we are using for preliminary
testing is not resistant to wear. This is an area of concern because our system is meant to be operated with no physical intervention. The professor also raised
legitimate questions about regulating the motor's output.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
We do not have access to equipment and are facing long shipment times due to COVID-19.
Schedule
The GANTT chart is provided under the project management tab.
We want to start work on building the translational system once parts are ordered and arrive. In the meantime, we are refining the gripper design.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Our budget for the project is $1250. We have notified sponsors concerning parts for purchase and are finalizing choices.
Progress on Report and Webpage
