Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
The Machining stage of our project has begun, with the manufacture and assembly of prototype doors in progress.
Final FEA Simulations are being completed using the finalized model geometry as found through the optimization code.
Testing is planned to begin once the first doors are assembled.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
All relevant materials for the project have arrived and can now be used for manufacturing purposes.
Shane and Ahmed made significant progress on determining how to apply the 16 point fixtures to the CAD model for FEA purposes.
Kakeru successfully ran his MATLAB optimization code and determined the ideal spacing between stamped stiffeners in our model, and these geometries have been applied to our final CAD model.
Joao took the lead in completing our second report draft and applied the geometric updates to our CAD model as recommended by Kakeru's code.
Our Preliminary Design Review presentation was given.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Shane and Ahmed will run the remaining FEA tests using the shell element and fixture methods discussed previously. Priority will be placed on running FEA tests that resemble the 3-point bend test that will be conducted later this week so that there are theoretical results to compare with the physical ones.
Shane will begin work on forming the draft poster that is due this Friday.
Kakeru will make reservations for our 3-point tests and take the lead on ensuring our model is tested correctly.
Joao will be taking the initial lead on machining the door components. Once all other team members complete their individual tasks, they will also help with machining.
Per Professor T's assignment, the latest draft of Team 11's project report will be reviewed and critiqued by all four members of our team and will be submitted this Wednesday.
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Few changes have been made regarding our sponsor's feedback on our project due to one of the sponsors being out of town during last week's meeting. We expect this week's meeting to go into more detail, and consequently we expect to hear new reactions and feedback.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Last week's feedback from our professor was mainly in context of the preliminary design report that was given to our section.
For future presentations, diagrams from the report should not be copied and pasted.
For FEA, it is recommended that we not only run our CAD model under flight conditions, but to also see how much pressure it takes to make the door fail.
Our team in general did not focus nearly enough on project impacts and standards in our presentations, and our professor emphasized the importance of these topics.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
In regards to the presentation, feedback from the other students was mostly positive.
The primary critique was involving making our presentation less wordy, making results and contour plots in pictures larger, and practicing our presentations more beforehand.
Risks and Areas of Concern
Our major area of concern at this point in the project is time and time management.
With only 2 weeks left before finals week, we have very little time to machine our doors and run proper tests on them.
We will need to be extremely efficient these next two weeks to ensure that we present a complete product and proper analysis at the end of this project.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Now that methods of applying point fixtures in Solidworks are known, Shane and Ahmed will need to clarify with Collins that the point fixture methods used in our FEA simulations are satisfactory.
Schedule
This week's two milestones include reviewing team 11's latest report draft (due Wednesday) and completing a draft poster (Friday night).
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$917.10 has been spent for material purchases.
Progress on Report and Webpage
The second draft of the report was submitted this past Friday.
Any feedback/corrections made by Professor T. and our TA will be implemented as we update our report to prepare our final draft.
