This was our on-site meeting with Mr. Alberto Lopez and Mr. Johann Schrell, from Collins Aerospace, in Chula Vista. It was our first in-depth analysis of the tasks at hand since we could only go more into detail after the Non-Disclosure Agreements were signed, and that was only done on this day, 3/4/19. The very first time the team talked to Collins was on the previous Friday, 3/1/19. On that meeting we established a weekly meeting time and glossed over what our main goal is, and the challenges we would face.
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
We discussed the scope of our project with Mr. Schrell and Mr. Lopez, both of which are Collins engineers involved in the baggage door design endeavor.
It was determined that Fabrication concerns would have a low priority on our project, Testing would have two levels (pre-prototyping, to decide what designs are more favorable, and post-prototyping, to decide what is the top design), and our Analysis and Design would be done in CAD and FEA software, the decision of which to use we agreed should be the objective of one of our Individual Component Analyses.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
We filled in NDAs, Budget, and Lab Needs forms together.
We were shown the preliminary CAD for the first time.
We gathered numerical values that will be essential in Analysis.
We discussed the scope of the project (should we focus on the geometric design of the stiffener or on the overall door? should we research materials?).
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
To do initial prepping, understanding physical concepts, and finally coming up with a list of designs we could potentially implement.
Out of those designs, start picking the ones that are most desirable and write down the results in our Risk Reduction report.
To gain a broader understanding of our challenges, start the Individual Component Analyses.
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
We will only meet on-site when necessary; most of our talks will be over phone, like on our first talk last Friday.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Being one of the only teams that still hadn't met in person with the sponsors in Week 8, our main goal after our meeting with Prof. T in Week 8 was to gather more information after signing the NDAs in Week 9. Action taken to address this, obviously, was our very fruitful meeting with Collins, and the beginning of our work in the Individual Component Analysis and Risk Reduction.
Risks and Areas of Concern
The "Hash" design from the Risk Reduction report is the default stiffener set-up in the industry. The main risk is that no other design is found to have a superior moment of inertia to volume of material used ratio; in which case, our project did not succeed in providing a new, unique design - but it did in proving why the industry standard is optimal.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
The actual CAD file still hasn't been shared with the team - but is not necessary at this stage.
Schedule
Our next goal is to start Risk Reduction (stiffener designs), and decide on Individual Component Analyses and start working on them, too.
For Risk Reduction, we will have each come up with 2 or 3 designs next week, and will pick the best 5 out of those the week following that. Each team member will then analyze one.
See Gantt chart.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Spent: 0.
Remaining: $5000.
Progress on Report and Webpage
We will have the Risk Reduction report up on the webpage by next week.
