Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Final steps are being made regarding our FEA and CAD designs.
Fabrication of our full-scale door and our two testing doors is expected to start this week once materials arrive.
More detailed plans are being developed regarding our testing procedure.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Shane and Ahmed have made progress on the FEA of the curved door model. Shell elements have now been implemented, and they will continue to be implemented for the remainder of FEA tests.
Joao made progress updating our past report draft and updated our current CAD model to implement suggestions from Professor T. (see instructor feedback).
Kakeru has made significant progress on the optimization code and on researching locations for physical testing.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Shane and Ahmed will further update the FEA tests to take into account the 16 reference points provided to us by our sponsors.
Kakeru will finalize the optimization code and implement the geometric results into our final CAD model.
Joao will take the lead on machining our scale door model and our two testing doors.
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Our sponsor has been happy with our project progress.
Some of our meeting slides, such as the Conceptual Design and BOM slides, need to be updated and more detailed overall.
In regards to testing, if our testing method does not apply a large enough load to replicate the 10.7 psi load safely, we can talk with the applicable testing lab and see what safe load we can go up to.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Professor T. provided valuable insight regarding our shear stress concerns.
By placing horizontal strips along the inner surface of the door, we can provide substantial shear strength for our design.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
No further feedback was received from the other students in our class this past week.
Risks and Areas of Concern
One major concern will be the time taken to machine our doors. Our materials arrived later than we had originally attended, so we will machine our door models quickly.
A detailed testing plan needs to be created as soon as possible, that way valuable time is not wasted once we finish machining the doors.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
At this point in time, all of the desired geometric constraints have been provided by Collins.
Schedule
The Design Proposal Presentation is May 19th
The second draft of our report is due Friday, May 24th.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$917.10 has been spent for material purchases. Unless more materials are needed for whatever reason, it is unlikely that more of the budget will be spent.
Progress on Report and Webpage
A second draft of our report was uploaded to the website this past Friday. Feedback from our professor will be received this week.
