Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Mock-up seat construction has begun to determine optimal comfort level for Lance.
Process of obtaining materials for fabrication has begun.
Final design for design review on Tuesday has been worked over with more precise measurements.
Considerations for smaller details regarding trike frame under examination.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Decided on ATI 3-2.5 TItanium, grade 9 cold worked stress relieved with 6-4 ELI filler rod for welding. Tubes are redily available from our titanium contact. Decided to use custom made standard modulus carbon from Mitsubishi Rayon Carbon Fiber and Composites. Carbon can be turned out in a week or two once custom mandrel is fabricated. (Sam, Ved, & Sean)
Titanium to be supplied beginning of next week for fabrication. (Ved & Angelica)
Seat mock-up under construction for next Tuesday to determine optimal angles and distance from boom (Sam & Angelica)
Work on rear configuration nearing completion and fixed boom design determined. (Sam & Nicholas)
Shape of base tube still under consideration.(Nicholas, Sean, & Angelica)
Mesh seating with barred supports were determined to provide ample suspension for comfort of Lance. (Ved, Nicholas, & Sean)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Research wheel canter angle for front wheels. (Nicholas & Angelica)
Determine testing capabilities of on campus lab. (Ved, Nicholas, & Angelica)
Determine optimal tube shape for base tube of trike. (Nicholas, Sean, & Angelica)
Obtain carbon properties for base tube and begin fabrication of mandrel. (Sam & Ved)
Construct mock-up seat and have final design ready for design review next Tuesday. (Sam, Sean, & Angelica)
Obtain titanium and begin fabrication. (Sam, Sean, & Ved)

Boom attachment should be simple, solid, and robust. Having no adjustabilty is better. (1/16/17 in person)
Pedal of front seat should be more in-line with the hips than previous 2 iterations. (1/16/17 in person)
Figure out capabilities of on campus machine shop to fabricate mandrel for carbon base tube. (1/16/17 in person)
Piston-like movement in rear seat was very unpleasant for Lance. Consider ways to remedy this problem. (1/16/17)

Project may continue onto Spring Quarter (1/12/17 in person). Message has been relayed to Jose Doval.
Solidify what Team 04 will complete in the 10 weeks, what can be done and what cannot be done. (1/12/17 in person). Team 04 is working closely with Jose Doval in order to come up with a possible Gantt chart of expectations throughout the quarter. End result is still the same as before: Bike frame (including seat frames) that will be ready for attacments (such as pedals, gear/chain systems, etc.)
Explore use of shells in FEA to use the built in bending properties of shell meshes (1/12/17 in person). Team 04 is still figuring out how to do this exactly, but many advancements have been made in FEM: Carbon tube can be analyzed with an orthotropic lay-up configuration of the laminates (i.e. with different angles and # of plys), in conjunction with isotropic metallic titanium and aluminum parts.
Double check what testing configurations/fixtures are open for Team 04's use (1/12/17 in person). Team 04 is meeting with Tom morning of 1/19/17 in order to clear this up.

"Good job, keep up the good work." - Kaveen Patel (1/18/17 in person)
Risks and Areas of Concern
Little experience with welding and no experience with titanium welding.
Fabrication of mandrel may not be feasible in machine shop, delaying carbon component.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Carbon base tube properties currently unavailable. Emails for specs have been sent and phone calls will be made if necessary.
