From the Project Description on the Sponsored Project Proposal:
"A-Leg-Up has been in business for 5+ years. We have sold over ten thousand units and had to halt production due to life circumstances. This year we are looking to come back online and to be
bigger and better than we were before. With that said we are looking to automatic our catalog sales packaging. Our packaging for catalog sales consists of a polytube plastic bag that is impulse heat
sealed on one end and then a cardboard backer insert is placed inside. The A-Leg-Up is then inserted and then the unit is sealed on the other end. We would like to automate this process."
High Priority Objectives
Dispense product from a stack
Automatically insert product and backing into packaging
Second Priority Objectives
Automatically seal the packaging once product is inside
Mobile packaging system
Other Constraints and Issues
Money. Project budget is not significantly large, and all parts in the final iteration of the project must be relatively cheap to replace.
Parts must be easily replaceable.
WOW Design Solution
They hope to have a space efficient, low cost, fully automatic for single units, with higher efficiency than 160 units packaged per hour.
See the Final Design tab for an in-depth discussion of our design solution.

Theoretically the system should be able to package a unit in 31.1 seconds, if all components performed as desired. This is a 45% improvement over the 45 seconds it takes to package a unit by hand. However, the cutter was not capable of reliably cutting the plastic due to it buckling under the cutter. The time measurement for this process was taken by holding the plastic down by hand to avoid it from buckling. In addition, times of components vary slightly from individual testing due to delays in communication between arduinos. As such, this mark was not consistently acheived.
