156B Week 4
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Fabrication
Began cutting steel tube frame with existing material and bought more from IMS (4/24)
finished cutting steel tube frame
began welding steel tube frame
Design
Water Brake Design finalized (4/28/17)
Tests
Will begin load cell tests once part comes in next week; Setup testing this week with Greg
Purchases
Most items purchased the previous week arrived
Bought tubing from IMS
Bought bearings from VXB
Purchased aluminum stock for water brake and driveline components
aquired a DAQ sponsorship from NI
Mapped out Remaining Work and Persons in Charge
Reflected this in the Gantt Chart
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Began fabrication: began to cut steel tubing
Made major and multiple purchases to get things rolling
Ex. reservoirs, all equipment for frame, load cell, reservoirs, and pump
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Finalize RPM sensor choice and design into system - Chinaar
Finalize Water Brake Design and begin fabrication - Justin
welding frame- Chinaar and Luke
Finish spec design of water system - Cassandra
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Meeting with Sponsor : 4/22
Consider using Griffin brand radiators
was too expensive for our design solution
Consider using a Fuel cell(aluminum contained fuel storage device that is more safe)
suggested looking into this for long term sponsorship while current design solution stays the same.
Consider how vibrations would affect a single cylinder engine?
Bill Schlossnagel's Dyno
consider upgrading his dyno to automatic when we do ours: he can pay for the material and we can do the labor
consider the valve for water flow on Bill's dyno. how many turns to close it?
Action: visit dyno on Saturday 4/29 while he runs Rob's engine on the dyno
Action: got Bill's email for easy communication
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Meeting 4/19 (Wednesday, Week 3)
Reduce scope: define exactly what we're going to do. Don't need to make a clean cut for the scope
Primary objective: Mechanical system complete
Secondary objective: DAQ with LabView incorporated
Tertiary objective: automation of system (inlet control valve)
Divide group into machining/brake and instrumentation/pump subteams
Action:
Luke and Justin: mechanical parts
Chinaar and Cassandra: instrumentation and pump system
test and collect data (set up VI) with help of Greg to get ahead of data aquisition
get DAQ(s) and sensors if available
Action:
Chinaar talked to Greg after Monday's lecture to discuss possibilities, also borrowed RPM optical sensor from Steve Roberts (due on 5/12)
Frame material thickness
Action:
Luke explained that 1/16th will be used instead of 1/8th since deflection using FEA showed only 4mm of deflection
Safety Analysis: add a bit more on engine safety
Action:
Luke to add more on his safety analysis chart regarding this
added section on fuel safety and mandatory chemical fire extinguisher requirement.(yellow fire extinguisher)
Will we have time/money to fix water brake if it doesnt work?
Action:
Team will be able to machine it wider if necessary
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Risks and Areas of Concern
will likely go over budget
NI sponsorship for DAQ
fabrication timeline dependent on things going well
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Schedule
Proof of Concept presentation: 5/3
Draft of Report: midnight 5/5
purchase materials for water brake: 4/28
finish manufacture of frame: 5/7
finish manufacture of water brake components: 5/10
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
of $2200 budget: $1407.74 has been spent and $988.20 is estimated cost of remaining items to purchased (see attached purchase list for details)
Progress on Report and Webpage
Report
Added Impact on Society section from last week
Need to add new section and update and review existing sections for this week
Webpage
Added edited report file to the Reports Page
Need to check with profs about requiring a new PDF of the report each time, and/or deleting the old ones.
