Weekly Progress Reports (see sidebar), the Gantt chart, and this Project Management page should be printed out before meetings with the sponsor and instructor.
All team members should be able to explain all items on the progress report.
Place a "*" at the beginning of the title of the active week Progress Report (see * in sidebar).
Project Objectives
High Priority Objectives
Evaluate suitable technologies for determining % moisture in compost (TDR and others)
Test technology on samples of compost, both green waste and biosolids, with varying salinity. Determine accuracy (+/- X%)
Determine if two settings will be needed for the two main types of compost: Green Waste & BioSolids. E.g. Setting 1 is for Green Waste (low salinity), Setting 2 is for BioSolids (high salinity).
Source raw components needed to build our own basic prototype (digital readout, sensor, wires, software)
Second Priority Objectives
Probe should be durable enough to be inserted into a compost pile 6ft deep repeatedly without damage
WOW Design Solution
The Dream Design would be a fully functional % moisture meter with two settings. One for Green Waste and the other for BioSolids. The probe would be accurate within +/-5%. The probe would be able to be inserted into 6 ft of compost repeatedly without damage.
Risk Reduction Strategy
Purchase FieldScout TDR 300 soil moisture meter (Spectrum Technologies). Possibly other probes to test.
Test at local Compost Facilities (Agri-Service in Oceanside, and San Diego Greenery). Determine % moisture out of the box.
Identify best % moisture detection technology for compost.
Intermediate Milestones
Purchase Probes/Determine Technology to Use (11/25/15)
Test Probe in Compost Piles (green waste/biosolids) (12/2/15)
Assemble components to make our own version of probe (12/30/15)
Refine probe performance to obtain +/- 5% in both compost types (1/29/16)
Develop Design ideas for the 6ft probe version (2/5/16)
Assemble components for 6ft probe (2/29/15)
Present prototype of probe (3/11/16)
Individual Component Analysis Topics
TDR - probe
TDR - sensor only
TDR - software used
TDR - wires used
TDR - unknown components
