Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
About to order acrylic for walls and compartment dividers
need to confirm payment method with sponsor
After arrival of acrylic
machine walls
attach floor, one wall, and ceiling of tunnel
lasercamm compartment dividers
Spray projection coating on to walls before attaching
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Finalized design of wind tunnel
removable side wall
additional chamber for fan with honeycomb and mesh
Spoke to Ridout plastic and acquired quote estimate
Spoke with Tom Chalfant about cutting acrylic methods and final design feasibility
obtained honeycomb
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Speak to Chris Cassidy and order Acrylic for walls and compartment dividers (Harry, Melissa)
Potentially get quotes for acrylic at specific sizes
CAD Modeling of projected hinge design (Emilio, Elliott)
CAD Modeling of Lasercamm items (Elliott)
Purchase Fan (Emilio)
Start assembly of tunnel exterior (Harry, Melissa)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Acrylic should be 1/8" to 1/4" for the projection stimulus
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Meeting 4/1 in person:
Detaching the entire wall with clamps would be easier than using hinges
Both options in mind, will test both at assembly stage
Hinge design preferred for sponsor use (easy for one person)
Seal removable wall with rubber extrusions or use soft foam
Make sure final design doesn't have any shearing motion
Use a longer
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Emailed to us on 4/1:
Entrance length effect
We will test entrance length effects and adjust the assembly accordingly if required
Non constant duct cross section (No context for this student comment)
Other stimulants other than visual stimulation
food or pheromones are not ideal because of remaining residue from previous test runs which can negatively affect future tests
use honeycomb diffuser (straws)
we intend to use some sort of honeycomb that may also duel as a mesh to keep the flies out of the fan
other materials besides acrylic
needs to be clear
acrylic matches other projects within the lab and also in compatible with our coating spray
glass is heavier and more fragile
how are we ensuring flow through the entire tunnel
the tunnel is sealed ensuring that air can only exit at the end of the tunnel
Risks and Areas of Concern
Projection
Will High Speed Projectors cover the entire surface?
If not, can a stronger projector be adjusted to reach higher speeds?
CO2
valve required to switch airflow?
does the flow need to be 100% CO2 in order to asphyxiate flies
Resources or Information Required but not Available
How to adjust a projector's color wheel to allow higher buffer rates (allow use of movie projector for fly stimulus projection)
Schedule
