Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Created a rough draft of design
Currently working on finalizing design to create first prototype within the next two or three weeks
Need to buy peel & stick rubber pads for final design: http://www.eagleamerica.com/product/420-3012/safety_supplies
Need to decide on & buy helper hands
create track for helper hands
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Decided on a lung reservoir design
Figured out how to mount the helper hands
Decided to create a little tool kit of different tools to attach to the helped hands to aid with set up
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Jasmine - Design of modified drainage system and continue to work on tilting mechanism
From the last meeting with sponsor, the sponsor would like to have a different system for drainage.
Instead of overflow channel design, a bottom tunnel drainage system will be developed.
A reservoir will be included as part of the whole chamber design.
Looking into purchasing parts needed for this project.
Jordan - Ordering tubing adapters and possibly the tubes
Size of tubing adapters will be determined based on the size of tubes applied for the chamber.
Meeting with sponsor to discuss using tubes already available in the laboratory.
If necessary, acquiring tubes through purchasing; size of tubes will likely to be similar to those frequently used in the laboratory.
Paul - Beginning construction of first prototype
Ask Chris Cassidy about the 3D printing.
Acquiring details about the availability of various thickness of acrylics.
Email sponsor to set up meeting; our sponsor is due for a trip and will be absent for a while.
Will - Finishing up finalized CAD design
Inclusion of Helper hands in the CAD
Modified drainage system to what sponsor would preferred.
Beginning CAD on the tilting system.

Culture medium will not be used during imaging (only beforehand while prepping equipment to make sure lung does not dry out)
Need a way to drain culture medium from the bottom
It is critical that the lung does not move at all during imaging. The saline solution will be flowing through the heart and into the lung and since the organ itself is very small, the vibrations from the tube containing the solution can cause the lung to move.
Would prefer tubing to go in through the side of the chamber to maintain stability
For the "helper hands", have 3 on the rim of the lung reservoir and make them movable along the edge
Think of needle cap alternatives
Likes the magnifying glass idea

Does the equipment need to be sterilized?
No, but we will ask the sponsor
Is there a lot of pressure in the lung?
No
Via email on April 8, 2013
We can choose to include Tommy in the team if we want but it will be unlikely that he will get in

3D printing is porous so the material should be treated before use (to be able to hold liquid)
Consider using a sponge to soak up excess culture medium
Risks and Areas of Concern
Worried about how to water proof the small inlet and outlet holes on the chamber
How to connect the acrylic and the 3D printed parts together while making them water tight and rigid/ secure
Resources or Information Required but not Available
None
