Using Minecraft Education Edition in year 10 Geography to help my students consolidate their understanding of concepts learned in the topic 'Urbanisation'. I found that students were not only more excited to attend class, they were more engaged and on-task throughout the lesson where this may not always be the case.
The level of 'Minecraft' expertise of my students varied, however, students were quick to support each other and show one another what they needed to do. Within the first lesson, every student was able to logon to Minecraft Education and commence building our new suburb. As the lessons progressed, I found that some students learned how to code and were using coding to build and renew areas of our world.
As the lessons progressed, we would review the suburb from an individuals, communities and governments perspective, use real-life case studies to evaluate actions and sustainability considerations and apply them to our suburb. My class learned how to work as a team which was representative of real-life situations. This task further assisted my students to prepare for their end-of-topic assessment task and performed above average. I would recommend using Minecraft Education to any teacher.
