Where are you from? What university are you attending or have attended?
Born and raised in Colorado, but my family moved to Oklahoma when I was 10. I now go to Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.
What have you studied in science or are currently studying?
I am majoring in Biology with a focus in ecology. I have worked on a variety of projects including prairie restoration, grass seed morphology, dendrochronology, and other ecology-related things. I love prairies and other grasslands, as well as wetlands, but basically enjoy most areas of ecology.
Do you have any ideas on what a middle school student could do in Science right now?
Not sure.
.
What or who inspired you to get into Science in the first place? What do you like about Science?
I love the great outdoors and figured I would enjoy studying it. It just seems second-nature to me. Ultimately, I would love to combine my love of science with my passion for sustainable agriculture and help create a more sustainable agriculture system. I love the unpredictability and complexity of nature, as well as its resiliency. Biology and ecology is constantly fascinating me because there is so much that we don't really understand and there is so much more to learn. It is never boring, and it is especially nice when I get to work in some of the beautiful natural areas on earth (such as Mt. Rainier!).
What advice do you have for a middle school student who is interested in becoming a scientist?
Do it! Find what you love about science, whether it be the fieldwork or the data crunching, or any other aspect of the wonderful world of science. Follow your aspirations! You could truly change the world with your science!
