Lauren worked deploying seismographs for the iMUSH project. Lauren is from California and is a geology and hydrology student at University of California Davis. Here are her responses to some questions:
What have you studied in science or are currently studying?
I am currently studying Geochemistry and Hydrology.
I work for the US Forest Service teaching kids about the 1980 eruption of Mount. St. Helen's. I also work for the Volcanic Monument teaching kids about the geology of the mountain.
Do you have any ideas on what a middle school student could do in Science right now?
I think a great way to study science is to do it hands on. Science camps happen during the summer, and even simple experiments at home can teach a kid a ton about a complicated subject.
.
What or who inspired you to get into Science in the first place? What do you like about Science?
I really turned to a science nerd after working on the mountain. I was always really interested in math. But after learning about the way science shaped what I see when I look outside, I grew to love the study of rocks and structures.
What advice do you have for a middle school student who is interested in becoming a scientist?
I would say find something you love and do it with passion. If you love science, help improve/contribute by being the best you can be.
