HOMEWORK & Reading LOG

Homework will be assigned on most days Monday through Thursday. I will not typically assigned homework on the weekends, but there may be the slight occasion that this will happen.

Homework will consist of short assignments that reinforce class material and should not take more than 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Homework assignments will typically include Fundations practice, a Math review workbook page/worksheet, and an occasional Journeys review workbook page/worksheet. Reading will be listed as a homework assignment each night, but will not be included in your child's homework grade. I like to include this as an 'assignment' because I really want the kids to get in the habit of reading each night before they go to bed.

Each day, your child will write the assigned homework in his or her Homework Assignment Book (HAB). This responsibility is given to students and practiced to ensure students' success and to help them continue to 'take charge of their learning.' Please be sure to check your child’s homework each night and initial next to the date so I know that you saw it. Also, please be sure to let me know if your child has a difficult time with any concepts reviewed in homework assignments so I can review it with him or her at school!

Homework grades will be given weekly and will count as a Supportive Grade [as per the district's Grading Policy]. Students begin the week with a 100% and will lose points each night a homework assignment is missing.

Nightly Routines :

In addition to the assigned homework here are some activities that I recommend you do with your child on a daily basis. I know that nights are often busy, but taking a few extra minutes to review trick words and math facts can go a long way in helping your child become fluent in these areas. In addition, getting in the habit of listening to your child read OR reading to your child each night will help your child become a better reader!

SUGGESTED NIGHTLY ROUTINES :

  • Sight Words : Make flashcards [add the Fundations 'trick words' from each unit]

  • Math Facts : Make flashcards [by fact family : +1s, +2s, +3s, -1s, -2s, -3s, etc]

  • Read! Read! Read!

Reading Log :

This year, I would love for your child to continue their love of reading or develop a new-found love for it. I know that not everyone 'loves' reading and if your child falls into this category I would like for them to develop an appreciation for reading! For these reasons, I would love for your child to get in the habit of reading each night before bed. Reading to your child counts, too! The general rule of thumb is often 15 to 20 minutes each night, but I know some nights it's hard to get this in. The chart below is powerful in visualizing the positive impact the habit of reading daily (even if it's not for an entire 20 minutes) can have on a child's academic success.
