Word Study/Foundational Skills

Coming new this year, 2022-2023, will be trainings for K-1, special education, and intervention teachers to utilize Heggerty and FUNdations for primary foundational skills instruction that adheres to the Science of Reading. The FUNdations scope and sequence of letters will replace the current order of letters. All FUNdations scope and sequence of "trick words" will be taught along side ELA module sight words.

There is also a Scope and Sequence of Word Study in the curriculum for grades 2-5. This is the order in which word patterns are introduced throughout the Modules as they relate to PA Core Standard Foundational Skills and Language Domains. 

"Word study involves 'doing' things with words- examining, manipulating, comparing, and categorizing- and offers students the opportunity to make their own discoveries about how words work. (Bear et al., 2016)."
