The PA Core Standards address the need to provide direct and explicit instruction of Academic Vocabulary. "Research has shown that when teachers, schools, and districts take a systematic approach to helping students identify and master essential vocabulary and concepts of a given subject area, students comprehension and achievement rises (Marzano, 2005)."
The purpose of Academic Vocabulary in our curriculum is to provide students with common definitions and examples of words that help them understand instructional dialog and text. As part of our district-wide use of the Marzano Teacher Evaluation Model, we have also adopted Marzano's Six Step Process to Teaching Academic Vocabulary.
