Learning Target: I can research and consider the effects of technology on society; the good and the bad.
Task 1: Ask the Tough Questions
With technologies, it is always good to ask ourselves; how much of a good thing is too much of a good thing? Consider the following questions:
1. What are the effects on society and individuals of always being in touch? Consider increased business efficiency, convenience of shopping from anywhere, leisure/games, general convenience of converged technologies in a single handset, etc.
2. Could smartphones be bad for society? Consider road casualties caused by driver/pedestrian distraction, disruption to sleep patterns due to exposure to blue light emitted by LCD screens, radiation emission, being constantly in touch with work, etc.
3. What are the pros and cons of mobile computing: health, safety, social interaction, privacy, never being out of touch, keeping up with friends/family, etc.?
Task 2: Inquiry & Research
Pick one of your interests from above and do some research using the keywords and sites listed below. You will need to focus on one aspect of the questions, not all. You will need to do mini research, develop a stance supported by at least two sources, and create a one page (double spaced) paper summarizing your research with a citation of the two sources provided on a second page. Submit the assignment in Google Classroom under the extra credit assignment. (Your report is worth a maximum of 10 extra credit points.)
