In Kindergarten - our focus is on responsibility of borrowing, caring for books; Love of reading. We do a lot of activities around the topic of taking care of someone else's property. What does borrowing mean? We publish our own book on taking care of books, the students being the illustrators. We talk about authors and illustrators. I read to them often. I try to read multiple books by the same author over a few weeks time. They learn the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Students learn the importance of using a book mark to save their place in a book. and how it keeps the book healthy. They learn the importance of using a shelf marker to keep the shelves in order and keep books from getting "lost" and in the wrong shelf address. We talk about spine label and their importance and we play spine label bingo.
