In Gr. 4 the focus for the year is on the Dewey Decimal System. We start with the ooos and go all the way to the 900s, each week doing a different section. We have a contest and at the end of the 10 weeks, the winner (or winners) win a prize. Students take out books from each of the 10 sections. After the 10 weeks we play Dewey Decimal Bingo, Let's Do Dewey and other online activities on the library web site. We do Dewey crossword puzzles, word searches and other fun games to reinforce the 10 Dewey sections. I work with the Gr. 4 teacher helping her students find lexile level books to fulfill her genre requirements. Students get an Online Card Catalog review with advanced searching strategies. I introduce the students to Marvel (Maine's Virtual Library-Maine State Library) as well as Novelist K-8, a wonderful book database for students. Students also participate in the Maine Student Book Award , voting takes place in the spring.
