Gr. 2 has a strong focus on alphabetical order. Review of the previous two grades and what they have learned so far is still so very important. Parts of a book, nonfiction/fiction, shelf markers, bookmarks, proper care of a book - all very important. We begin alphabetical order and author's last names. We do a lot of activities to practice alphabetical order. Students learn about the Caldecott and Newbery awards and which books have been winners in past years. We discuss the spine labels and play spine label bingo. Students never tire of spine label bingo. I introduce series books (higher reading levels) and encourage students to get hooked on a series.
