In Gr. 5 our focus is on reference books. We start the year by reviewing the Dewey Decimal System, play Dewey games and do activities the first few weeks of school. Then we dive right into Reference Books. We do activities each week for each of the reference books introduced (Thesaurus, Almanac, Atlas, Encyclopedia, Dictionary) and practice using them. I work with the Gr. 5 teacher on several classroom projects, information text, biographies, citing sources, independent reading books and project books. I review the Online Card Catalog and advanced search strategies. Gr. 5 students are self sufficient on the catalog at this point. We review Marvel (Maine's Virtual Library) and Novelist K-8. I have introduced the Reading Challenge which challenges them to read DIFFERENT books than they normally would. We participate in the Maine Student Book Award, voting takes place in the spring. Sometimes......we just read.
