One reason our students attend the DHH Centerbase program together is for Deaf Culture. It is important that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students can attend school with other peers just like them! The term "Deaf Culture" describes their history, values, Deaf role models, language, and even jokes! The DHH students attend community events like Signing Santa and Deaf Track and Field. These are great opportunities for the students to interact with other DHH students. It doesn't matter if a student Signs, Cues, or Talks... or what kind of listening device the student wears... everyone is accepted and loved! This social aspect is so valuable to our DHH program!
The Centerbased DHH program provides Deaf role models for our students. Our students have met Kenny Walker (first Deaf player in the NFL and a BRONCO!) and Karen Putz (Deaf barefoot water skier). They inspire our students to follow their dreams, despite their deafness.
