The ceremony will be followed by pictures and snacks to be enjoyed with family and friends. Afterwards, students will return to the GLC to pick up their personal belongings, receive their report card, and say a final goodbye. Finally, students will be released for summer at 11:50. Woohoo!

April 2018 Newsletter

I cannot believe that there are only 33 instructional days left in the school year! The time has gone by so fast. We had an excellent time exploring the woods and soaking up the natural beauty of Koinonia. It would helpful if you reviewed the order form with your child before that date in order to address any inaccuracies before the order is processed. The dough will be available for pick up on December 12th after school to be delivered to whomever has ordered it.

October 2017 Newsletter

October is underway and conferences are upon us! I am thoroughly enjoying meeting with you and your children to discuss our academic goals for this school year. It is wonderful to be able to sit down with you and your child and share my observations about your child with you and also to allow your child to share their thoughts about their strengths, goals and areas they feel they could improve in. That being said, I can't wait to continue with conferences and meet with you all! We had

Here is a breakdown of upcoming events and information about where we are at in various curricular areas as well as any projects or assessments coming up:

Current Curriculum:

Reading: Students are working with their literature circle groups to discuss the book "Fish in A Tree". They are also working on a reading comprehension packet which is used to analyze a non-fiction article in the October/November issue of Storyworks. This packet is directly tied to common core standards for informational reading and will be used as part of their reading/language arts grade. Therefore, it must be completed at school. This packet is due by October 13. They will receive multiple packets throughout October and November that are related to this issue of Storyworks. They may bring their copy of Storyworks home if you would like to review the articles with them however, as I said before their comprehension packet must stay at school in order for it to be taken as a grade.

Math: We have completed lessons 1-6 in Module 2 of Eureka Math. The students receive a weekly check in (quiz) on the concepts covered each week every Friday. They took their weekly check in for lessons 2.1-2.6 today. Next week we will cover the following lessons 2.7-2.9 . Due the large amount of lessons in module 2, there are 29, we will have a quiz on the concepts covered in 2.1-2.9 next Friday 10/13 as our weekly check in. Some ways your child can review for this quiz is to complete any unfinished problem set problems in their red folder, and/or use zearn to review the concepts taught in these lessons.

Science: Our class has just finished our science rotation with Ms. Jiang and has completed Investigation 4. They will be taking the I-Check for this investigation on Tuesday October 10th in my class. Ms. Jiang helped them go through the textbook today and showed them where the content/questions for the I-Check would be coming from so that they could use it to review for the upcoming assessment (I-Check 4). Students are encouraged to review their science worksheets and the readings associated with Investigation 4 prior to taking the quiz. The FOSS website listed under grade 5 resources on my website may also be helpful (www.tinyurl.com/Grade5Pandas) .

Social Studies: The class is working on preparing their group reports on Native American cultural regions. They will begin presenting these to the class next week. Since I am taking this project for a grade they may not add content to their google slides at home. We will begin our next social studies unit, lesson 4, the week of October 16th.

Writing: I am so impressed with the growth the students have made during our narrative unit! We will start our next unit, Research Based Argument Essays, on October 16th and the unit will continue until December 1st.

September 2017 Newsletter

It is hard to believe that four weeks of school have already flown by! We are now in week 5 and the students are tackling the curriculum at a more accelerated rate. The students write what we have worked on in class in their planners daily. Also, they write what work could be done at home in order to increase comprehension of concepts we have covered in class. Here is some information about what we will be covering this month in regards to curriculum:

Science:

The class is excited to start their science rotations with our other fabulous 5th grade teachers next week, beginning with Ms. Jiang and ending with Ms. Joo. We are currently working on Investigation 5 in our Water Planet unit in our class and will take the I-Check for this investigation next Friday. The students would benefit from completing the readings for each investigation and answering the review questions associated with each. Often we have time to work on these in class however, not all students will have time to complete both the reading and the review questions daily. Therefore, I encourage students to take the science textbook home in order to complete the readings as well as to prepare for the I-Check.

Reading:

We have started our class novel "Fish in a Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and the students have been holding book discussions daily regarding the rich content found within it. I am impressed with the connections the students are making between the characters in this book and themselves as well as connections between these characters and characters from other books they have read. The whole class seems to be really enjoying the book; so much so that many have a hard time putting it down when it's time to move on to other work ;)

Writing:

Writer's workshop is also going well. The students overall writing stamina has improved; they are able to write continuously for longer and longer periods of time. The quality of their writing is also improving as we work to raise the level of our writing during our daily mini lessons on revision skills. I can't wait for you all to join us on September 29th for our writing celebration (the time of our writing celebration will be announced via email sometime next week).

Social Studies:

This month in social studies the focus will be on Native American tribes and how the land/region they chose to live on influenced the way they lived. The students should have their reading notes and vocabulary completed for Lesson 2 by this Wednesday,9/13, as there will be a quiz on this lesson on Thursday 9/14.

Math:

In math the class is working on multiplying and dividing decimals. This week we will be covering lessons 11 and 12 which are focused on multiplying decimals using both the standard algorithm and the area model. Next week, the week of 9/18 we will cover lessons 13,14,15, and 16 which will focus on division of decimals and word problems that cover both concepts. Finally, during the week of 9/25 we will review the concepts covered in module 1 and the students will take the End of Module assessment on 9/26. Students have the option to use Zearn and they may also complete any problem set problems in their red math folder that they did not have time to finish in class in order to review for the test.

That pretty well covers what the students will be working on this month, next up is some information about upcoming events/important dates here at school and in Room 52.

Here are some upcoming events and important dates for Room 52/Stocklmeir Elementary:

Hurrican Relief Donation Drive: Donations for those affected by Hurricane Harvey can be brought to Room 30 on 9/14 at 8 am or at 2:30 pm. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

Staff Learning Day: No school (for students) on 9/15

Volunteer Training: Training will be held on 9/18 in the GLC. There are 2 sessions for this training: 8:30-9:30 and 9:30-10:30

Picture Day: Our class's picture time is on 9/21 from 9:00-9:20 am. Make ups will be available for students who are absent that day.

Conference Schedule: Will go out to parents with siblings here at Stocklmeir first. All parents will be able to sign up for conference time slots starting on 9/20. The link will be posted on my website under Student Goal Setting Conferences and will also be sent out as an email to all parents.

August 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians and students of Room 52,

Hello and welcome to 5th grade! My name is Neva Tracy and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I am so excited to get to know you and your children during the course of the school year!

This year Stocklmeir is piloting a new homework policy. We believe that elementary students should live balanced lives--we value education, learning, play and family time. It is our hope that the implementation of this new policy will promote equity and balance in our student’s lives. Our homework policy for the 2017-2018 will follow these guidelines:

    • No work outside of class will be graded
    • Unfinished classwork can be completed at home, but the child will only be graded on the portion completed in class.
    • Teachers may recommend outside work and resources to help students prepare for tests, presentations and projects.

With that being said, I have high expectations for myself and my students. Learning just like anything else requires practice in order to succeed. It is suggested that students practice reading, writing and mathematics daily in order to further develop these skills. We are a learner focused classroom. This means that your child will collaborate with their classmates on a daily basis. Our fabulous 5th grade team has put together a website of resources that parents can access in order to provide their children with opportunities for additional practice outside of school: www.tinyurl.com/Grade5Pandas

It has been my experience that parents and teachers working together as a team is key to a successful and rewarding year for students. As such, communication is important to me. Please feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns, and do not hesitate to call me at (408) 732-3363 ext.81252 or send an email to tracy_neva@cusdk8.org. I am available to meet briefly before or after school, but setting an appointment works best.

I am looking forward to an exciting, and productive year of learning and growth with you and your child!
