After working on their resumes during the semester, students role played a job interview in English. It was a great opportunity for students to review different verb tenses and interact in a more authentic way.

Access students were divided into three different station. Each station was responsible for doing an activity to make the project work, that is cataloging books, decorating the corner, and advertising and getting in touch with school principals to implement the project.

Libraries
May 17th, 2019
Access students had the chance to attend a workshop presented by one of CTJ's librarians, in which they learned how to classify and catalog books. It was an important step to get students involved in their project to take the English language to their communities.
Field Trip - Planetarium
May 10th, 2019
Access students went on a field trip to the Planetarium of Brasília and had the opportunity to learn about the science behind rockets and other spacecrafts. The lecture was delivered by a startup named Zenit Aerospace, which is connected to the University of Brasília. After having some input about rockets, satellites and drones, Access students were invited to make their own rockets. Later, they launched their rockets in a very inspiring and exciting competition.
Cinco de Mayo
May 3rd, 2019
Since Cinco de Mayo is a popular date in the United States, we decided to celebrate the Mexican-American culture and heritage. In this lesson, students used iPads to learn about the date history and the reasons it is celebrated in the US. In trios they had to teach each other what they had learned about this celebration. Students were able to discuss why Cinco de Mayo became a very popular holiday in the US.
Natural Phenomena

Students had the opportunity to create videos using Chroma Key. Working in trios, Access students had to create dialogues in which they could talk about natural phenomena by practicing Simple Past and Past Continuous. By doing this, students could practice vocabulary and grammar in a meaningful way.
Saint Patrick's Day

To celebrate Saint Patrick's, Access students wore something green and played Kahoot to check how much they knew about this traditional celebration.

Later, students were invited to use Legos to create, collaboratively and using the target language, a rainbow, which is one of the symbols of this celebration.
Finally, science and candy all in one perfectly simple science activity for students to work with predictions. Students arranged M&M's in a pattern around the edge of a plate alternating colors in any number they like- singles, doubles, triples, etc. Before pouring in the water, the teacher asked students to form a hypothesis using "will "or "won't". "What do you think will happen to the candy after it gets wet?". After carefully pouring the water, students were able to check whether their predictions were accurate or not.
Resumés

The goal of this activity was to make students understand the nature and purpose of a resume by examining a variety of examples to determine best layout, content and style. Students discussed the Do's and Dont's in groups and then they were invited to join Google Classroom to edit their documents during the semester, this way they can reflect on the process of creating an effective resumé. Class was reminded that it is essential to continually update their resumés.
Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, Access Students had the opportunity to watch the renowned speech given by Martin Luther King Jr, and discuss the importance of such powerful words.
Later, students were divided into groups and asked to answer the following question: "What makes you happy?". On a piece of paper, students have to think of answers that would go under five categories (sights/smells/tastes/sounds/feelings) given by the teacher. All categories are aligned with what is being studied in the books.
Finally, students used the brainstormed vocabulary to create and record an "I have a dream" speech.
Cooking Class

Access Students had the opportunity to bake their own cookies. Teacher José Antônio shared his wonderful recipe, and taught everybody how to prepare those treats. Students were supposed to ask about ingredients and quantities, since this is the grammar topic they have been studying. Later, my students were asked to work together and recreate the recipe using Google Docs.
Halloween
Oct 26th
In order to celebrate Halloween, our Access students played a quiz about monsters and a Kahoot about Halloween traditions. After that, students had a lot of playing "Guess Who".
Democracy and Class Representative
Oct 19th
Since Brazilians are about to decide who is going to lead the country for the next four years, Access students discussed the importance of Democracy and compared the different types of Government. After that, the teacher asked students who would like to be the class representative so they could choose by voting for the one they considered the best, and have a little taste of what democracy is.
Native Americans

As part of the celebrations of Columbus Day, our Access Students had the chance to study the history of the First Americans, and create posters with some of the important tribes found across the USA.
Biographies
Sep 28th
Students prepared presentations about American personalities from different areas. Since students had studied "Simple Past", they were expected to use this grammar structure to talk about the highlights of those personalities.

Aug 31st
Students were asked to create two versions of their cities: one representing their cities today and another representing their cities 10 years ago. The aim of this activity was to make students reflect on the changes the places they live have been through. To do so, they had to think of the different buildings/places there were in the past and there are in the present. Using the target language they were invited to present their projects to the class.
Prepositions of Place - Stop Motion
Aug 24th
After learning how to use Preposions of Place, Access students were asked to create a Stop Motion movie using their cell phones. First, they created the script, then using play-dough they created the objects and characters for their projects. The teacher had them download the StopMotion Studio on their phones, and after a few instructions, students were ready to start using their creativity. It was really fun!
Tiny Houses
August 3rd
Our Access students were asked to create their own version of the environmentally friendly tiny houses. In order to achieve that goal, students learned about furniture by watching a video and placing each piece of furniture into the correct room while drawing. After that, students used VR glasses to explore 360 videos of tiny houses. Finally, students created their own tiny house version by using a sheet of paper and lego pieces.
The Fourth of July (Independence Day)
June 22nd
Our Access students had a traditional American meal to celebrate Independence Day, that is to say, hot dogs and watermelon. We had the teachers positioned into four different stations to help students assemble their hot dogs and get some soda. Students could help themselves with watermelon on another station. Students were also encouraged to take selfies and post on a website created by teacher Lucas.
Father's Day
June 15th
In order to celebrate Father's Day, our Access students listened to "Father & Son" by Cat Stevens. It was a productive listening exercise in which they had to fill in the blanks and sing along. After that, students were invited to discuss in groups the concept of "Generation Gap" by using expressions such as "like/ hate/love". They had to compare their likes and dislikes to their parents', justify their opinions and come up with possible solutions to the differences of opinion between people of different generations.
Flag Day
June 8th
Students played Kahoot to learn some interesting historical facts about Flag Day. After that, they were given some time to think and tell their partners how much they knew about the Brazilian Flag. Finally, students went to the Resource Center to make flags of some American states. Students were also expected to write interesting facts about those states by using there is/are, which is the grammar topic being covered.
Memorial Day
May 25th
Students watched two video segments from "Saving Private Ryan" to understand why Memorial Day is such an important date in the United States. By watching the horror of World War II, students learned that soldiers went to war to protect important values to humanity such as honesty, compassion, respect, responsibility, and courage. Students were then encouraged to express those values by drawing and writing sentences to build a "Wall of Peace"
Press Freedom
April 27th
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3rd, so we decided to bring this topic to our Access Students for them to discuss the relevance of checking information before believing and sharing everything they see on the Internet. First, Students were asked whether some pieces of news were true or false. Later, they were asked to create their own fake news using "can" or "can't", since that's the grammar point they've been studying. The results were amazing and I believe the understood the importance of the topic.
Earth Day
April 20th
In order to celebrate Earth Day, Access Students were asked to come up with ideas or possible solutions after checking a presentation about the topic. Then they played Kahoot to assess how much they know about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. After that, students watched Jeff Kirschner's TED talk on how and why he created an app to raise people's awareness about preventing littering and polluting our environment. To wrap it up, our Access students downloaded the app and were asked to go outside and take pictures and clean up the litter they found near the school premises.
Easter
March 23rd
Students played a kahoot to check how Easter is celebrated in the US. After that, they discussed if there were any differences in Easter celebrations in Brazil and in the US.

Saint Patrick's Day
March 16th
To celebrate Saint Patrick's Day, teachers Rachel and Lucas taught students an Irish Ceilidh traditional dance. They had a wonderful time learning the steps.
Athos Bulcão - Field Trip
March 9th/16th
After visiting the Exhibition "100 anos de Athos Bulcão" at CCBB, our Access Students were asked to create online quizzes using Kahoot. They could also create their own tiles/paintings inspired by the artist's work.

Black History Month
February 23
Students were invited to reflect upon the importance of celebrating African-American History and how it could be related to the students' cultural backgrounds. Then, students were asked to create a Google presentation collaboratively.
Valentine's Day
February 16
Students were asked to compare Valentine's Day with Brazil's Dia dos Namorados, and they found out that Valentine's is to celebrate love with the ones they love, that is, family, friends, boy/girlfriend, etc. After that, they did origamis to give to their valentines.
Thanksgiving
November 24
Students played Kahoot to get to know the History of Thanksgiving and then they wrote messages to put up on our Thanksgiving tree.
Veterans Day
November 10
Students learned the importance of this date after watching a video and taking an online quiz.
Job Fair
November 10
First, our Acces Students were invited to take an online survey about jobs. After taking the survey and discussing opinions, students were asked to prepare a presentation about the jobs presented in the book. They were asked to research about the professions, job market and salaries in the US and Brazil. The results were incredible and they were able to deliver amazing presentations.
Halloween
October 27
Our Access students had the opportunity to learn and have fun on that special date. First, they learned some Halloween superstitions and traditions playing Kahoot.
Next, students went trick or treating at CTJ and helped decorate the school.
Columbus Day
October 6
The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus's sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. His landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. Our Access students had the opportunity to test their knowledge on the topic answering a Google Form.
International Day of Peace
September 22
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. In order to reflect on the date, Access students created posters using Google Slides to express their feelings about bullying in their schools and neighborhoods. Saying no to bullying was the way they found to talk about peace.
International Literacy Day

To celebrate International Literacy Day, our Access students were invited to choose a book in our Resource Center and write a report.
