CERAMIC TWO
$20.00 TO BUY GLAZES
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In the Ceramic 2 class students will continue to perfect the hand building techniques learned in Ceramic 1. The wheel will be available to those students interested in learning to throw. Students will also learn other ways to add texture and decoration to their creations. The class fulfills .5 credit of the fine arts requirement and is for those students who like a “hands on” activity and does not mind getting a little dirty. Ceramic 1 must be completed before taking Ceramic 2. I will demonstrate how to build each project and students will spend most of the time creating and glazing their own works of art. Our budget has been cup over six thousand dollars over the past couple of years so the twenty dollars is used to buy all the glazes we use since the school does not provide them. The money is due the second Friday of the tri.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND CLASSROOM GUIDELINES:
BATHROOM PASSES--Passes are restricted to five minutes. Students must sign out the time they are leaving and the time they return, as well as their destination. They are not to go to the lunch room or roam the school with their friends.
In order to provide the best possible learning environment for your child, guidelines for behavior will be introduced on the first day of class. This will give every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior.
All other guidelines in the student handbook also apply.
Follow directions the first time they are given, you need to pay attention and take notes.
Take care of ALL the art materials. Use tools as demonstrated. Respect property. Return everything you borrow.
Be to class on time, sit in assigned seat, and start the bell work. Bell work will consist of locating your project, get out necessary tools or supplies, and begin work while listening quietly to the announcements or while I am taking attendance.
The room is very small so do not bring anything to class except a pencil and notebook.
Work quietly on projects and frequently check the requirements and instructions listed on the tall brown cabinet. Use the class time wisely and respect others at all times.
Always clean up after yourself.
Do not throw objects over the wall or visit others on the other side.
After clean up you will remain in your seat until the bell rings.
No food, drink
Do not touch other students work, especially in the drying area.
Every student has the right to work in a positive learning environment. If a student chooses to break a rule, (mine or the handbook) the following consequences will be imposed:
1st time—Student receives a warning and no further consequences unless it is a
“major” infraction in the student hand book.
2nd time—Student is given a writing assignment. Parents will be notified after the student receives the second minor misconduct (time permitting the student will make the call) Detention before or after school will be assigned if a minor infraction is repeated.
3rd time—(in one period) Student will be removed from the classroom and sent to the office and parents notified. Student will need to make up missed work
3rd time—(in the card marking) Parents will need to come in for a conference.
SEVERE DISRUPTION—( harassment, fighting, causing harm to another student, destruction of property, defiant behavior or others mentioned in the hand book) student is referred to the office as directed in the handbook.
MATERIALS:
Tools and clay are provided by the school but glazes are purchased with the fee money. Our budget has been slashed six thousand dollars the past couple of years so this is the only way to purchase the glazes.
GRADING:
Make sure you look at the rubric located on the brown cabinet.
Each ceramic project will be given three grades. The first grade is for craftsmanship, the second grade is for creativity, and the last grade is for the glazing. Zangle will show how many points each project is worth. In order for the student to be successful all projects must be completed by the end of the marking period. It is very hard to set a due date for everyone to be done on the same day because of the firing schedule, the length of time projects need to dry out, and the difference in the time needed to glaze a project. The only test is the Final Exam. A week before the exam a vocabulary sheet will be handed out covering terms we have used in class. Projects consist of 80% of your grade and the exam is 20%.
WEEKLY GRADES—Weekly grades will let you know if your child is working everyday and cleaning up. If they do these two things their weekly grade will be an A. If you see anything lower, you need to ask them what they are not doing.
ABSENCES If a student is absent from class and gets behind they can come in on Tuesdays to make up the work, during their lunch or they can take a project home to finish. If a student is ill for an extended period of time an assignment might be dropped.
