CERAMIC 1
$20.00
We ask each student to bring in twenty dollars to cover the cost of the glazes. The school does not give us enough money to buy them. I also buy the garbage bags we use to store the projects, the squeeze glazing tubes and metal tips, Kleenex, printer ink, the table cloths, and other supplies we use. If a student cannot pay they need to speak with me in private and I will excuse it. Any unpaid fees are held until students are seniors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In the Ceramic 1 class students will explore a variety of hand building techniques to create ceramic projects. Students will also learn various ways to add texture and decoration to their creations. They will explore line design using coils and carving into the clay, added clay design, impression, and stencil design. These projects and decoration techniques will enable students to successfully move on to the Ceramic 2 class. The class fulfills .5 credit of the fine arts requirement and is for those students who like a “hands on” activity and does not mind getting a little dirty. I will demonstrate how to build each project and students will spend most of the time creating and glazing their own works of art.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
To provide the best possible learning environment for your child, guidelines for behavior will be introduced on the first day of class. This will give every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior. All other guidelines in the student handbook also apply.
1. Follow directions the first time they are given, you need to pay attention.
2. Take care of ALL the art materials. Use tools as demonstrated. Respect property. Return everything you use back where you got it.
3. Be to class on time, sit in assigned seat, and start the bell work. Bell work will consist of locating your project, get out necessary tools or supplies, and begin work.
4. The room is very small so do not bring anything to class. Backpacks should be left in their locker. If they bring them to class them must be stored on the ledge by the left window. DO NOT put them under your desk or on your chair.
5. Work quietly on projects and frequently check the requirements and instructions listed on the tall brown cabinet. Always use the class time wisely and respect others.
6. Always clean up after yourself.
7. Do not throw clay on my nice newly painted walls,
8. After cleaning up you will remain in your seat until the bell rings.
9. No food, drinks. Water bottles will be kept in the back packs.
10. Do not touch other students work, especially in the drying area.
11. CELL PHONES—CELL PHONES ARE A BIG DISRUPTION IN THE CLASSROOM!!! PARENTS, DO NOT CALL YOUR CHILD DURING THE CLASS TIME. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO TEXT, WATCH MOVIES, TAKE PICTURES, VIDEO OR HAVE THE PHONE OUT DURING CLASS. IF YOU HAVE THEM OUT YOU WILL GET POINTS DEDUCTED FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION GRADE. ABSENT??? Making projects, glazing, and working on ideas is continues for the entire semester. If a student is absent they can always come in mornings to make up work or take work home. If a student is absent for an extended period of time for illness, an assignment may be dropped
GRADING:
Each ceramic project will be given three grades. The first grade is for craftsmanship, the second grade is for creativity, and the last grade is for the glazing. MiStar will show how many points each project is worth. For the student to be successful all projects must be completed by the end of the marking period. It is very hard to set a due date for everyone to be done on the same day because of the firing schedule, the length of time projects needs to dry out, and the difference in the time needed to glaze a project. The only test is the Final Exam. A week before the exam a vocabulary sheet will be handed out covering terms we have used in class. Projects consist of 80% of your grade and the exam is 20%.
WEEKLY GRADES
Weekly grades will let you know if your child is working every day and cleaning up. If they do these two things their weekly grade will be an A. If you see anything lower, you need to ask them what they are not doing.
Students, the weekly grade does not include scraping the tables when it is your turn.
