We have lots to be thankful for. Giving thanks refocuses us to that reality. I love this holiday because it's a day that is about gratitude. There are so many things we take for granted that our neighbors don't have, or get to experience. For one person I know, it was a decent pair of shoes. That's something I take for granted, but this person was so very grateful to have a good pair of shoes. We have plenty of need right here in our own neighborhood, and with each need, the opportunity to give somebody something to be thankful about.

We are a local nonprofit in Santa Cruz County with low overhead that can give you better bang for your buck if you want to make a difference locally. Crossover Sound Waves is comprised of a board, and works with volunteers to help families facing a housing related crisis. Some basic housing related facts:

• It costs about $5000 per incidence to help a family keep their current housing, but it costs about $50,000 to rehouse them once they’ve lost their housing and need to be re-housed1;
• Many families in shelters are living on a fixed income and may not be able to pull together enough money for a security deposit when they do find housing;
• Many families live from paycheck to paycheck with no safety net. If an unexpected expense, like a car needing repair, comes up, families are faced with terrible choices like ‘do I pay my rent, or do I get my car repaired’.

We provide small grants to help families to either get housed or stay housed. Some of what we are about has to do with using Music and Art to raise awareness and money for this cause, but much of our funding comes from private donations.
