Individual Counseling

Individual School Counseling

What is the purpose of individual counseling?

There are a number of support services to assist your child in achieving academic, personal, and social/emotional success throughout their school day.  Short-term individual counseling is available for students who need additional support. Counseling referrals may be received from students, teachers, and/or parents/ caregivers. Individual counseling meetings will take place during the school day, Individual counseling may occur for just a few sessions or may extend to weekly/bi-weekly/monthly check-ins for a more extended time frame, as needed.  Individual counseling will focus on the specific needs of each child.

How does individual school counseling differ from therapy?

"School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools to address psychological disorders. However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health crises and needs. School counselors address those barriers to student success by offering education, prevention, and crisis and short-term intervention including group counseling until the student is connected with available community resources. When students require long-term counseling or therapy, school counselors make referrals to appropriate community resources (ASCA, 2012)."
