In addition to extensive laboratory work, a variety of lectures and workshops are offered to enhance participants' educational and professional development. Lectures are presented by a faculty member skilled in research methods such as
IR and Raman spectroscopies
NMR spectroscopy
acoustics and history of musical instruments
techniques in biochemistry and molecular biology
scanning probe and electron microscopies
Workshops are designed to enhance the professional development of participants. During workshops, students produce an artifact that will help them access a career in science. Workshops focus on topics such as
creating an effective resume and cover letter
career panel Q&A (representatives answering questions about careers in academe, industry, medical fields, and government)
lab exchange days (spend a day in another lab learning a new technique or piece of equipment)
With guidance from their mentors, participants will hone their speaking and presentation skills at poster sessions. Twice during the summer, students will share their results and explain their discoveries to other students, faculty, and visitors. This fun event is a favorite of the campus community.
