Taupo Fly and Climb Trip - Late August (To be Confirmed) 2020

Pietro Zugnoni is planning a fly and climb trip to Taupo for a long weekend. Plan would be to take off for sunrise and come back for sunset, taking either Friday or Monday off work. Flight time is approximately 4 to 4.5hrs flying to get there, 8/9hrs flying return. Max 4 people total (Pietro +3 passengers). Sleeping at campsite or local airbnb. To move from airport probably easiest is to rent a car for all 4 of us -strictly climbing luggage with not much extra weight allowance. Plan for a weekend in August.

Past Trips

Ben Ohau Range - 1st/2nd August 2020

Eric Skea and Scott Sutherland are planning a trip to Dun Fiunary in the Ben Ohau Range, 1/2 August (with 8/9 August as an alternative date if we need to postpone due to bad weather). We will probably climb via the North East Face or North West Face routes from Whale Stream, unless conditions favour climbing from Stewart Stream in the Dobson. See ClimbNZ for route descriptions/grades.Plan to leave Christchurch at 6pm on Friday evening, drive down and car-camp near the start of the route (several camping options exist depending on route choice, TBC). On Saturday we will head up to a high camp, then attempt the summit (Saturday evening or Sunday morning) and head back down the way we came on Sunday. Avalanche kit essential.

Participants should be comfortable moving through typical grade 1 – 2 terrain (without ropes), and be prepared for a possibly chilly snow camp.
