The web proxy allows your connection to appear to come from the Observatories when you access specific web sites. The can be useful if you don't want to route all your traffic via the Observatories using the VPN, but you still want to access online journals. It is configured for all the online journals for which we have institutional access.
You will need a login and password for the proxy as your normal account login is not used. Contact OBS Admins to get these.
Proxy setup for Firefox
From the Firefox (MacOS) or Edit (Windows/Linux) menu select Preferences
Scroll down to Network Settings and click the Settings... box
Select Automatic proxy configuration URL
Enter http://proxy.obs.carnegiescience.edu/proxy.pac into the box.
Click OK
When you go to a restricted web page a login box will appear. Enter the login and password that were provided to you.
Proxy setup for Safari or Chrome on MacOS
Open System Preferences.
Click on the Network icon under Internet & Wireless
Select your currently active network connection and click on the Advanced button
Select the Proxies tab
Under Select a Protocol to configure select Automatic Proxy Configuration.
In the Proxy Configuration File box enter http://proxy.obs.carnegiescience.edu/proxy.pac
Make sure Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) is checked.
Click OK
