VPN Access

Before you can connect to the VPN you must contact OBS Admins to be added to the VPN access group and you must be enrolled in DUO two factor authentication.

Connections to the VPN are made using Forticlient software running on your computer or by using the web interface.

For MacOS and Windows:

• 1. Download and install Forticlient VPN. Downloads are available for  Windows ,  MacOS ,  Linux rpm (Centos/Rocky),  and Linux deb (Ubuntu). Additional installers for mobile platforms are also available. 

  2. Open Forticlient Console.

  3. Click Configure VPN.

  4. Use the default VPN Type of SSL-VPN.

  5. Give the connection a name, for example OCIW SSL. Description is an optional field.

  6. For the Remote Gateway enter vpn.obs.carnegiescience.edu.

  7. Leave the port set to 443.

  8. Leave Client Certificate set to None.

  9. Enter your normal login name as your Username. Don't include @carnegiescience.edu

  10. At the connection screen enter your normal login password (the one you use for Gmail) then click Connect.

  11. You will see the see the two factor authentication challenge appear.Typically you will enter 1 to use the DUO app on your phone, but you can also enter a passcode directly, or receive a text message. Then hit OK.

You are now connected. The screen shows your local IP address which will be 10.7.101.x. All your connections go through the Observatories and your route to the Internet at large is the Observatories Internet connection. When you are done click Disconnect to be returned to your normal Internet connection.
