The role of a School Psychologist can be complex and diverse and it can vary from school system to school system. However, no matter the system, School Psychologists are there to help children succeed academically, socially and emotionally. They understand how certain issues (i.e., learning difficulties, social relationships, managing emotions, etc.) can affect a student's behavior, school engagement, and emotional well-being. Within a school system, a School Psychologist's roles can include: consultation, assessment, intervention and counseling.
According to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), "school psychologists are uniquely qualified members of school teams that support students' ability to learn and teachers' ability to teach. They apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior, to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. School psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community."
