Planning for life after high school starts on the first day of ninth grade, when students begin to forge relationships with fellow students and faculty alike as they move toward and through a significant period of life. Through the School Counseling Department, all Canton High School students will participate in a series of planned, sequential experiences, tasks, and development of knowledge and skills meant to help them develop into lifelong learners, culminating in graduation and entry into a college, planned career path, military service, or other well-thought opportunity. As each student is unique, no two paths are the same, and as sure as things sometimes go well or are challenging, the counselor will support the student through these always eventful years.
Big Future Start here (we do). The College Board's primary college search tool, and it is a good one. As a primary resource with official data direct from the colleges, you'll find it all: size of school, majors, admissions factors (test scores, GPA etc.) financial aid practices.
College Data Dive deeper into the data, compiled from official government resources. Be aware that the "what are my chances" feature estimates based ONLY upon registered users at this site. Use the data under admissions factors to better estimate where you fit.
Understanding Military Options Many students choose a branch of the military based on a strong family tradition or impressions. These are important, but research your choices thoroughly here. The right fit is just as important in service as it is in a college search.
Gap Year Options While it's always been popular for European students to spend a time exploring before heading to University, it's becoming more common here. Students can apply to college and defer admission for a year (preferred), or can simply take time to participate in one or a series of planned activities meant to advance personal growth, reflection, and service. The key to a successful year off is to have a plan. Speak with your counselor about options and resources for both paid and free programs.
Each year local high schools host a GAP Year fair see link for more details: GAP Year Fairs.
How To Choose A Vocational School
The link here provides excellent guidance on finding a reputable vocational school to earn a license or certification in a chosen trade. Community colleges across Connecticut have expanded their certificate programs as well, and a certificate from a state community college has the added bonus of state funding and oversight and the ability to earn college credit at the same time that you are learning a specific skill.
Local Community Colleges
Locally, check out Tunxis, Asnuntuck, Northwestern and Manchester Community Colleges, among others.
Students With Disabilities: Many colleges offer strong support services and all accredited institutions must meet federal and state guidelines. Please see the College Sourcebook attached below and discuss with your counselor.
