What is it?

Virtual Job Shadow is an online career planning and career exploration resource that provides all the tools and resources for charting your career path by choice, not chance. It's highly engaging, fun, and works on any computer, tablet, or smartphone, making job shadowing a unique digital experience! Features include: Digital Job Shadow Videos, Post Secondary School Search, Career Search, Job and Internship Search, Resume Builder, and Interactive Teacher Tools and Lessons.

Why are we providing this resource?

Virtual Job Shadow can assist GEAR UP in reaching several performance indicators.

• Students will apply to at least 4 colleges that match their GPA and SAT/ACT level.
• Students will report an increased knowledge of how to apply to college.
• More students will aspire to at least a 2- or 4- year degree.
• Families will report increased knowledge of how to support students in choosing an appropriate college.

Who is eligible for this service?

All GEAR UP students are eligible to use Virtual Job Shadow. Each student has a unique username (Powerschool ID #) and same password (jobshadow). If you have any issues with a student logging in, please contact:

What are ways this can be implemented at GEAR UP schools?

The possibilities for using Virtual Job Shadow are endless because it is accessible 24/7 from anywhere for students. A few suggestions include:

• Supplemental curriculum to career education or GEAR UP 101
• Media centers in school libraries
• Parent night activity
• Any class that wants to connect content to careers

Students can begin accessing the program today.

What support is available when using Virtual Job Shadow?

Jonathan Carpenter is the program expert at Appalachian State. He is available for additional training through webinars or visits to counties and can answer questions through email at carpenterjd@appstate.edu.

What do administrators have to say?

"VirtualJobShadow.com allows students to explore career options through the eyes of industry experts without leaving their classrooms or homes. Whether they are in 6th grade just learning about various careers or in high school truly investigating and researching careers, this tool helps them see the day-to-day lives of actual company employees and highlights not only their daily tasks, but what type of skills they use and their pathways to achieving their careers. The tools puts a personal touch and actually allows students to understand the careers better.

Students can also watch the videos at home with their parents/guardians and have key conversations around topics such as: Would I like a career like this? What type of post-secondary school would I like to attend? Do I need to earn an industry credential in high school? What types of classes do I need to take in high school to prepare me for this career?”
