Belleville East Deutschklub (German Club) is a school club, whose goal is to promote a better understanding of Germanic culture and to support German cultural events and organizations in the St. Louis area. We have meetings on the first Friday of the Month in D300 at 8am. In addition, there is always at least one after school event each month.
Activities:
Field trips! We take trips to local shows and attractions which promote German culture/ or enhance material we have studied in class. Some past field trips have included…
· Trips to see the Vienna Boys Choir in St. Louis, the St. Louis Symphony, the Belleville Philharmonic Society.
· Trips to the Art Museum to view the works of German artists and to the Zoo to practice animal-related vocabulary we’ve learned in class.
· Take a day trip to historic Hermann, Missouri to attend the annual Wurstfest in March.
· German Day at Washington University This event, held annually, is an excellent venue for students to meet and interact with other German students throughout the Metro St. Louis Area and as well as the State of Illinois. Students have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, games, and competitions related to the German language and culture.
· Meal at the Hofbräuhaus in Belleville
Other Activities:
Participation in the Belleville Oktoberfest: Working at the Belleville Sister Cities food booth, the children's area, singing German folk songs and decorating the public square and tent for the event.
Singing German Christmas songs at the Belleville Christkindlmarkt.
Watch German movies.
Parties/Banquets! German Club hosts a Christmas Banquet (open to everyone in the Club and their families) each December and an Honors Banquet (by invitation only) in late Spring.
Kaffeeklatsche! These are immersion experiences, conducted twice a year for one half hour from 7:45-8:15 am. Participants enjoy an authentic German breakfast and beverages speaking only German for the duration of the Kaffeeklatsch---a great way to improve speaking skills and make new friends.
Membership Requirements:
Anyone with an interest in the German language and culture is welcome to become a member. We charge $5 dues each year to help offset our operating expenses. However, active members recoup their $5 and a lot more in the course of the year.
We expect each member to help raise funds by selling at least 5 German Advent Calendars during the last two weeks of November. We also expect them to attend as many monthly meetings and activities as he or she can. That’s it. Not a lot of obligations, but a lot of opportunities for fun, friendship, and learning. Why not join us?
