German 5-6
Texts: Deutsch Aktuell 3: Kraft, Wolfgang. St. Paul: EMC Corporation 2005.
Die Reise seines Lebens: Turner, Lisa Ray and Ray, Blaine. Eagle Mountain: Blaine Ray Workshops 2009.
We will be using and finishing the Sabine und Michael materials which use storytelling to teach vocabulary and grammar.
Course Objectives: During the first part of the semester, students will review and expand upon all skills learned in the first two years, while mastering the past tenses and other higher level grammatical concepts through the use of the TPRS method (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Emphasis will be placed on listening and reading, which will in turn build confidence in speaking. Upon completion of the TPRS unit, the bulk of the material will be focused on grammar. Classes will be conducted primarily in German with daily homework being assigned to complement that oral practice.
Grading:
Grades will be given on a points system:
Homework Points = 5-20 points
Quiz Points = 25-50 points
Test Points* = 100-150 points
*including the Semester Exam
Projects/Skits = 50-100 points
Writing Assignments = 30- 60 points
Grading Scale: A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 and below
Additional Writing and Oral Assignment: During the course of the semester, you will be asked to write short, 50 word essays or journal entries—in addition to your other assignments. These essays or journal entries will involve topics related to chapters or other materials we are studying or events currently in the news. These written assignments will be graded mainly on the basis of your ability to express your thoughts clearly in German, but will also be assessed according to your correct grammatical usage of the language. We also do several small oral presentations related to the chapters we will study, as time allows.
