Hello to all of you in Year 6 in 2025. We are gearing up for another year of learning in the Studio. The clips and information you see here will help support your learning at school. Enjoy!
First up in 2025 is our Term 1 Week 10 Assembly performance. Year 6 are leading the assembly so it's pretty important that we put up a musical performance we can all be proud of.
We'll perform the waiata 'Wairua Tapu' which has significance for Anzac Day. Although April 25 falls in the holidays this year, we are honouring the special reason for this day by singing this waiata on the last day of term. Your first task is to learn the kupu (words) and when you know those well, we'll introduce the sign language and other aspects of performance.
Here is a sheet with the words (kupu) to this gorgeous waiata - it also has the chords if you'd like to play it at home!
This clip gives you a slower version of 'Wairua Tapu' with clear lyrics - great for you to learn the lyrics quickly
Once you've got the lyrics, try singing along with this clip - filmed in Boston with the New Zealand Youth Choir.
Here's another clip of the New Zealand National Youth Choir rehearsing 'Wairua Tapu'. It's probably a better clip for learning - with fewer people on screen you can see the actions more clearly.
Now we switch to learning about Keyboards - all about the white keys, how to find notes, the two types of chords and how to switch from one to the other. Focus on C Major and Am to play this piece of NZ music. You can take home some chord cards to help you with this.
