Karen Kain, 57

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/tigard-or/karen-kain-10635868

Karen was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in the Portland, Oregon area, where she had been living recently to assist in the care of her mother.

Karen had been living with her husband in Western Australia where she was in private practice providing Emotionally-Focused Therapy for Couples, having received her Master's degree at the Swinburne University of Technology. She also trained in Art therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a lover of Irish music and played the fiddle with a group in the Portland area. They posted this link to a very moving memorial service streamed on youtube, with the following caption:

"Karen lived her life mindfully and selflessly with compassion and kindness. Above all, she loved community and sought to build it where ever she went. So it is fitting today that her community stretches across the world, thank you for being a part of it. Karen's lived an eclectic life - filled with art and music and friendship. She was brought up Quaker and practiced Buddhism and today's service will have all these elements. "

PEDERSEN, Ann-Eve

journalist, public-education advocate, beloved mother, wife, and friend, died May 28, 2021. Ann-Eve was a native Tucsonan who traced her Southern Arizona roots to the 19th century when her ancestors oversaw the Silverbell Mine. She was educated at Howell Elementary, Mansfeld Middle School, Salpointe High School, and Brown University. She was talented, hardworking, charismatic, and kind. She began her career at age 22 as a receptionist at the Tucson Citizen. By age 32, she had become the City Editor of the Arizona Daily Star and its Employee of the Year. She won numerous awards for her coverage of the courthouse, and, as a young reporter on that beat, met her future husband Pete Eckerstrom, then a public defender. Her exceptional character as a person, which people sought to emulate, made her a natural leader. As her son Lars began attending public schools, she was outraged at how poorly funded those important institutions had become. In response, she founded the Arizona Education Network, drafted a proposition to restore a robust tax base for Arizona schools, and raised funds to place it on the ballot in 2012 as Proposition 204. During that time, she debated--and arguably bested--current Governor Doug Ducey twice on public television. She later took a post as Executive Director of the Southwestern Foundation, a charitable non-profit that has supported such organizations as the San Xavier Mission, the Amerind Foundation, and the Arizona State Museum. She was an eloquent advocate for the disadvantaged and would strive to ameliorate any human suffering in her path. While most might see a homeless elderly woman on a winter night and view it as evidence of a need for more governmental action, Ann-Eve would take that person into her home, secure her social security benefits, and find her subsidized housing. Her greatest joy, by far, was raising her son, Lars. She is also survived by her husband, Pete Eckerstrom; her brothers, Hans, Christian and Alexander Pedersen and brother-in-law, Paul Eckerstrom. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Aven, Dash, Fiona, Zoe, Lily and Poppy Pedersen, and Kyle and Kayla Eckerstrom. She had a special relationship with Kyle, Kayla, Aven and Dash. She was preceded in death by her father, Lars Pedersen; her beloved mother, Gwynne Barthels Pedersen and her brother, Erik Pedersen. Memorial Services will be conducted on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Fox Theatre at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the TUSD Educational Enrichment Fund. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

from: https://jjffh.com/tribute/details/709/Peter-Zidlicky/obituary.html#tribute-start

Zidlicky. Peter Thomas, 54, on October 7, 2019 in North Merrick, New York. Loving father of Tyler and Hampton. Loving son of Sophie and the late deceased Peter Zidlicky. Beloved brother of Paul and uncle of Sophie, Alexander, Sarah, Lucas and Mary Kathryn. Cherished friend and co-parent with Jennifer Ogden. He is also survived by cousins and aunts in the Czech Republic.

Peter was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the U.S. as a young child with his younger brother and devoted parents, who made a loving home for the family on Long Island. He went on to become a star athlete and student at Calhoun High School, in North Merrick, NY, followed by Brown University, as a Gilbane Scholar. At Brown, he majored in engineering, played for both the Football and Lacrosse teams, formed life-long bonds with his teammates and met his future wife, Jen. He was also a proud and active member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After college, Peter went into consulting and finance, graduating with distinction from Columbia Business School, and working with both large and boutique investment companies, including Morgan Stanley, Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette, and Atlantic Pacific Capital, before forming his own company, Sound Shore Advisors, in 2004.

But it was Peter’s two daughters Tyler,19, and Hampton, 15, who were the focus of his life. He was never happier than when he was watching or coaching his daughters’ lacrosse games and providing them with guidance and encouragement. Because of them and his passion for the game, he became involved in coaching local girl’s and boy’s teams, eventually founding Black Paw Lacrosse. He created his own unique stick stringing style that is carried by top women’s lacrosse teams across the country, including the Irish National Lacrosse team. Peter truly left an indelible mark on the next generation of lacrosse players and the many young players whose lives he touched.

While Peter and Jen separated in 2008, they remained the closest of friends, dedicated co-parents, and family. Pete enjoyed deep friendships in Larchmont and with his close gang of friends that grew out of his professional career, as well as a special, cherished friendship with Mary. He looked forward to spending family vacations in Virginia and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his brother’s family, and especially the 5 nieces and nephews whom he adored. In the years since his father passed, Peter doted on his mother, whom he loved dearly.

Perhaps Peter's greatest legacy will be his big heartedness, and his love of life and laughter. His generosity of spirit brightened every room and warmed the hearts of everyone lucky enough to know him. Taken much too soon, he will be missed by many.

Mass of Christian Burial Saturday 12:30 PM at St. Augustine Church in Larchmont

Reception to follow the Mass at Orienta Beach Club 1054 Walton Ave, Mamaroneck, NY 10543

Dr. Kate Livingston Vale 11/27/2016

A small gathering in memory of Katie is planned for Saturday afternoon during Reunion weekend at 3:15pm in the class lounge on the 4th floor of Jameson/Mead in Keeney (West) Quad.

From the site: http://katievale.com/

Katie loved learning and being a teacher. She had a foot in the classics with her love of Latin and archeology and in the future with her career in technology, having worked with educational technology since the 1980s when she attended Brown University as an undergraduate. At Brown, she contributed to the formative field of hypertext which eventually lead to the Web and Internet as we know it today. Throughout the years, she never lost sight that the goal of technology was to help enhance our capacity to learn and understand and not the technology itself.

She instilled a deep love of learning in her children to explore their interests while making sure that they knew how to be well rounded people of the world. She was a mentor to many in higher education and gave of her time selflessly for others when they needed counsel.

She loved the simple humble pleasures of knitting and gardening. She also had a more edgy side with her love of early punk, 80's new wave and funk; wherever she could find a good bass line. She expressed her love of music by being a DJ at 95.5 WBRU in college and was a proud alumna of the (in)famous Brown University Band.

She was a humble over-achiever having earned four degrees including her EdD from Boston University during which time she continued to work full time at MIT and had two wonderful children.

She was the better half and loving wife to her husband for over 25 years.

In 2015, Katie proudly joined Bates College in Lewiston, Maine as the vice president for information and library services and librarian, a role and school that culminated the many threads, passions and qualities of Katie's career. Bates President Clayton Spencer shared these wonderful words when informing the community of Katie's passing:

“Katie joined Bates 15 months ago, and she quickly proved herself to be a strong and creative organizational leader, a wonderful, collaborative colleague, a professional of enormous breadth and intellect, and a person possessed of quick wit and self-deprecating humor. She was a national leader in educational technology and a valued member of the senior leadership team.”

Editor's comment: I found it interesting that this same sentiment was mentioned in a tribute to Kevin Warmath (see below)...such special individuals, '...In one of the blogs, one of his Georgia friends wrote that Kevin would always call out to his children before they got on the school bus, "Remember to do your best to be kind to others." I will remember that, I think, forever.'

Kevin Warmath 1965-2009

John Kevin Warmath, 43, passed away 1/31/2009 at 10:15am. Honoring his wishes his organs will be used to save many other lives. In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to The Warmath Children’s College fund. details at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kevinwarmath

You may want to read what was written about Kevin on a real estate professionals' blog.

The following was posted on the Duke Masters in Public Policy Alumni page:

(March 20, 1965 - January 31, 2009)

Our classmate, Kevin Warmath, died of complications due to a heart attack on January 31. He leaves behind his wife, Sylvie and three children. The memorial service took place on Tuesday, February 3 in Roswell Georgia at the Northside Chapel.

This came as a shock to everyone in our class. If there was any benefit it was that it allowed the class to reconnect with each other and reshare memories of two important years in all of our lives. I have created a discussion group on LinkedIn to help keep these renewed conversations going in good times as well as bad.

Visit the Tribute Page to read what members of the class sent me (tributes, stories, photos, etc.) to post. From the official obituary announcement the family asks that contributions be sent in Kevin's memory to a scholarship fund for his children.

Lisa J. Flaxman 1965-2009

(From the Washington Post by Joe Holley)

Lisa Flaxman, 43, the founder of a Washington area music program for infants and young children called musiKids, died Jan. 14 of breast cancer at her home in Chevy Chase.

Ms. Flaxman created musiKids in 1998 when she couldn't find a music class for her infant son that combined early childhood music education with a dynamic teaching approach. At musiKids, she relied on professional musicians and experienced early childhood educators who encouraged children to sing, play, listen and move. The organization originally was based at Chevy Chase Baptist Church and now has studio locations in Bethesda, Rockville and the District, along with several area satellites. MusiKids teaches more than 500 children a week.

Families Magazine and the lilaguide, among other publications, rated musiKids the best children's music education provider in the Washington area.

Ms. Flaxman also helped schools and day-care centers evaluate their early childhood music programs and provided teacher training and guidance to integrate music into the curriculum.

Lisa Judith Flaxman was born in Providence, R.I., and received her undergraduate degree in history and international relations from Brown University in 1987. She worked for a publisher in Princeton, N.J., before taking a position in 1988 as a paralegal at Arnold & Porter, a D.C. law firm. She later worked as a consultant on linguistic programs at Booz Allen Hamilton.

After receiving her law degree in 1994 from Georgetown University, she worked as a tax and estate associate at Dow Lohnes until the birth of her first child in 1997.

Ms. Flaxman studied classical piano and had sung in professional theater companies since age 5. Her repertoire included opera, art song, musical theater, folk, and children's world music. In the Washington area, she performed with the Washington Savoyards, the Washington Chorus and the Bethesda Community Theatre. She was a member of Temple Sinai, where she sang in the chorus and served on the music committee.

She was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women in 2007 and in 2006 received the first Women Business Owners of Montgomery County Sapphire Award, acknowledging a woman in business for at least five years who gives back to the community. She also received a 2007 Maryland Top Innovator Award for founding musiKares, a nonprofit program dedicated to building music libraries and providing musical programs for Georgetown Hospital patients to help relieve their anxiety.

She was the author of a collection of poetry, "Glances at Time: A Young Mother's Journey with Breast Cancer," in 2008 and created an anthology of Georgetown Hospital patients' writing titled "Lombardi Voice." She wrote many articles on early childhood music and development.

Survivors include her husband of 16 years, Jonathan Martel of Chevy Chase; and three children, Benjamin Martel, Sophie Martel and Zachary Martel, all of Chevy Chase.

NOTE: Since the above was published, the Skoler family, with the assistance of David Lavallee '87 and Rob Adler '88, has established a fund in honor of Andrew at Brown that will sponsor lectures through the Brown Daily Herald, where he worked all four years as an editor. Donations can be mailed to: Andrew Skoler Memorial Fund, Brown University, Box 1877, Providence, RI, 02912.

The service on Sunday was a wonderful tribute, attended by hundreds of family members, friends, former co-workers, current colleagues, and members of the Brookline community. There were at least 15-20 members of the Brown community in attendance. Several family members spoke as did childhood friends. Brown friends Blair Hendrix and Rob Adler spoke as well. Each spoke of Andrew's amazing talents and knack for making those around him feel important and cared for. They spoke of his successful business endeavors and how he made a difference in the world, both personally and professionally. They talked about his wife, Vicki, and his kids, Charlie, Sam and Emma. Though there was sadness in their words, there was humor in many of their stories, which was a welcome break in the solemnity of the day.

They gave out notecards so that people could send their stories of Andrew to Vicki to share with the kids. If you'd like to send a note you can find their address in the Alumni Directory or email Classof1987@alumni.brown.edu

Danielle A. Parks 7/31/2007

From the published obituary:

Passed away at home 31 July 2007 surrounded by family and dear friends. Danielle was 41 years old. Danielle was an Associate Professor of Classics at Brock University, a dedicated archaeologist who was passionate about her research and teaching, and deeply interested in the success of her students. She set high standards for herself and for all whom she encountered. During her graduate studies, Danielle took part in an excavation in Cyprus. She returned to Cyprus annually, and lived there two full years. It became her second home, and her friends there became her second family. Danielle’s most recent trip was a heartwarming return in May of this year. During her 2 ½ year battle with Leukemia, she continued to be active at Brock in teaching and service, in the establishment of the new Masters Programme in Classics, and maintained her involvement in conferences, research and publishing. She never lost her zeal for life.

Danielle will be sadly missed by her husband William Meredith, her parents Michael and Linda; her brothers Christopher and Matthew, William’s parents Roger and Jean, her students and colleagues at Brock University, and by her friends and colleagues in Cyprus and around the world. The family would like to thank the dedicated and compassionate team of doctors, nurses and medical professionals at McMaster University Medical Centre who provided world class care for Danielle throughout her illness.

A memorial service will be held Monday August 20th at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn St. in Oakville, Ontario at 2 pm. A reception will follow at O’Finn’s Irish Temper a short walk from the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to:

Leukemia Research, Dr. Danielle Parks Memorial Fund (PLS3159A) established at McMaster University. (Canadian tax receipts will be issued) https://awc.mcmaster.ca/awc/MakeAGift.aspx; Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI), 656 Beacon Street, Boston MA 02215, and designated in Memory of Danielle Parks. (US tax receipts will be issued). Donations will support an endowment fund established to provide an annual Parks Prize to help fund travel and living expenses for future archaeologists working in Cyprus.

From the University of Glasgow website:

Danielle A. Parks graduated from Brown University in 1988, with degrees in Latin, archaeology and hydraulic engineering. She did her Masters degree at the University of Missouri, writing her thesis on the Roman coins of Cyprus (published as a book in 2004). She went on to do a PhD on burial customs in Roman Cyprus, also at the University of Missouri, under the supervision of Prof. Kathleen Slane. She spent several seasons working on the excavations of Kalavasos Kopetra in Cyprus, and in 1995 directed a new excavation of Roman tombs at Kourion’s Amathous Gate Cemetery.

After receiving her PhD in 1999, Danielle was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities post-doctoral award to continue her research at the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI) in Nicosia. From 2001 she taught in the Department of Classics at Brock University, St. Catherine’s, Ontario.

Even after she was diagnosed with leukemia in late 2004, Danielle continued teaching, writing and giving public lectures. She was instrumental in setting up a new Masters program in Classics at Brock, and continued supporting her students and colleagues even from her hospital bed. She died in July 2007.

The Danielle Parks Memorial Fellowship at the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute was set up in her name to support graduate students of any nationality who are working on the archaeology of Cyprus. The Department of Classics at Brock University set up the Danielle Anne Parks Memorial Scholarship to support graduates of that Department studying Greco-Roman culture.
