YDSC Updates
Lunch and Recess at WTMS
At WTMS, we believe that lunch and recess is a necessary break in the day for optimizing a student's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
Our YDSC team + faculty and staff facilitate safe and well-supervised lunch and recess spaces. Every classroom and occupied space is equipped with air purification units or MERV-13 HVAC filters along with windows that are operable are opened 3 to 6” to increase ventilation. Students eat as spread out as possible (with 6 feet being ideal, but not always possible), with a consistent cohort and/or eating outside as available.
We will still be going outside while it is still beautiful and above 32 degrees. We encourage you to have your student(s) layer up as we continue to go outside for lunch and recess when possible.
While indoors, we will split the cohorts up and have 2 cohorts in the Commons eating, while 2 others are in their respective classrooms. Students will eat maskless for ~15 minutes. After students are done eating their lunch they will clean up and sanitize their space/table, place their mask on and prepare to transition to recess.
Your Student May Not Be Eating Lunch + Microwaves
Lunch and recess is an exciting portion of your student’s day. Often students are so excited to see their peers and socialize that they forget, choose not to, run out of time to eat their lunch. Every lunch period starts with at least 15 minutes of sit down lunch time. We encourage you and your families to pack lunches in advance or prepare your student to eat lunch provided by the school before they engage in play. Lunch provides nourishment to the body and brain and reduces stress. Eating lunch provides a break from the activities of the day and gives energy for the rest of the afternoon.
We now have microwaves for your student’s usage! Students are now able to re‐heat foods brought from home in the microwaves. Meals should be able to be quickly heated. If it takes more than three minutes, please do not send it to school. Please send your student’s food in microwave safe containers. No metal containers, or containers with metal will be able to be used.

Save The Date!

Clarification on Attendance Policy
As a reminder, we are running two schools simultaneously - Hybrid In-Person and Remote Only. Because of this, you may see an “Absent” code in TeacherEase prior to 11am when our attendance is finalized. Attendance is now finalized around 11am once all in-person students are accounted for. If your student is marked absent earlier in the morning for remote attendance, it will be corrected. Please follow up after 11am by emailing wtmscoordinator@brooklynprospect.org if you see an attendance discrepancy.
What happens if I’m enrolled in the hybrid model, but my child is absent from school on the day they are supposed to attend in-person?
If your child is enrolled in our hybrid model and they are absent from school, they will not attend remote learning live classes. Instead, they should check Google Classroom for any assignments or work that was posted, and reach out to their teachers for any additional support.

WTMS Family Update
Need to Know
Dear WTMS Families,
As you all have likely heard, Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd. I am overcome with a sense of relief, optimism, and hope for a brighter future. And my heart is still heavy with George Floyd’s family and loved ones. A guilty verdict will not bring back George Floyd, or any of the 984 people that have been shot and killed by police in the past year, but it is an important first step in becoming a more equitable society.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said in his statement: “I would not call today's verdict justice, however—because justice implies restoration. But it is accountability. Which is the first step towards justice. And now the cause of justice is in your hands. And when I say your hands, I mean the hands of the people of the United States.”
To process and reflect on this moment, we held Circles for our students on Thursday in both remote and in-person advisories in order to prepare students to engage in an action-based lesson during Friday’s advisory.
Because this is just the beginning of steps toward a more equitable future, please take a moment to review these resources and take action as you see fit:

Step 1: Please watch the Course Request video (linked here). This outlines what courses your students will request, which ones they’ll be automatically enrolled in, and gives an overview of the 9th grade academic program and overall sequencing by subject group.
Step 2: After watching the video, please review the 2021-22 High School Course Catalog (linked here). This document provides details on the course offerings by the subject group as well as an overview of high school requirements. We also advise you to read about our IB Program as all students in the Class of 2025 will be enrolled in the IB Diploma Program beginning in 11th Grade. Further information about the IB can be found directly on their website.

On-Site COVID-19 Testing Update
As you know, our school has successfully implemented an onsite testing program over the last few months. All schools in the Prospect Schools network use rapid diagnostic tests (not PCR) to screen students and adults for COVID-19. We use them because rapid tests produce results within hours and are minimally invasive, making them ideal for onsite testing programs like ours. However, as you might be aware, PCR tests (i.e. not rapid) are considered the “gold standard” by medical professionals because they are very reliable. They can also be more uncomfortable to receive and often take longer to produce results.
Prospect Schools will be tweaking our onsite testing policy: moving forward, any individual who tests positive for COVID-19 after receiving an onsite rapid test must also take a PCR test administered by TeloPoint (our onsite testing provider).
The rationale for this shift is two-fold:
In March, Network Senior Leaders (SLT and Board) convened a panel of independent medical experts to share expertise and scientific guidance on running in-person schools during a pandemic. One insight the panel emphasized was the importance of using PCR tests to determine COVID-19 infection because of their high reliability.
As onsite testing has been carried out at schools, several “positive cases” indicated by rapid tests were subsequently negated by the Department of Health after further PCR tests showed negative results. This back-and-forth is disruptive to students and staff and we must be vigilant that any and all closure or quarantine decisions are based on accurate data.
Therefore: while Prospect Schools will continue to administer rapid tests at schools based on the reasons stated above, we will make additional PCR tests easily accessible to those who need to take them, per our updated policy.
Outdoor Lunch & Recess
We will be starting outdoor lunch and recess starting on Thursday, 4/8. Students are to come to school prepared to go outside for lunch and recess every day unless the weather does not permit us to do so. This means they should be dressed appropriately for cold/warm weather. Students should be dressed warmly in layers with ears, fingers, legs, and toes covered during the winter months. While sandals/open-toed shoes are a norm in the warmer months, toes should be covered in the warmer months as well. This may mean preparing your student to bring a set of closed-toed shoes.
Counseling
In light of the murder of Daunte Wright on Sunday and the Knoxville, TN school shooting on Tuesday, advisories held a moment of silence to honor the victims and allow students to process individual feelings. Advisors shared the following slide made by Dean of Students Nandi Edouard to support students in understanding moving through the trauma of these experiences. Please reach out to deans at msdeans@brooklynprospect.org or connect with the counseling team (Martha Diamond at mdiamond@prospectschools.org, Sarah Clore at sclore@prospectschools.org and Jessica Piña at jpina@prospectschools.org) for additional support.
All Access After-School Program
PLEASE REMIND STUDENTS TO BRING A REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE EVERYDAY TO SCHOOL! Students will have an opportunity to start going outdoors with their cohort facilitator during ASP club hours. It is extremely important they continue to stay hydrated throughout the extended day.
Additional Reminders:
In-person programming operates M/T/Th/F 2:10-5:10pm, for hybrid students only.
Remote-only services are open to all MS students via zoom on Mon-Fri, 3-5 pm.
Use our Family-Facing ASP Hybrid Guide for all things related to ASP, both in-person and remote activities.
If your student will not be attending in-person ASP on a particular day, please let us know by emailing our program office. Thank you!

Athletics Announcements
Thank you to all of our families for your continued advocacy for in-person physical activity opportunities for our middle school students. As a reminder to all families, our after-school program encompasses all extra-curricular activities in our community: enrichment (core/seasonal) clubs, study hall periods, student-led leadership organizations, and athletic programming. As we continue to create and oversee in-person physical activity guidelines, we will have more concrete information with sign-up opportunities on Wednesday, April 21st.
To answer some FAQs:
Will WTMS kick-off spring sports leagues for our students?
Our campus will NOT have league opportunities for students this spring 2021. NYC guidance on athletics was only cleared for certain sports as early as April, and we do not believe entering a league is the best opportunity for our students this season.
Why is WTMS not following the same guidelines as other Prospect Schools campuses?
Each campus is working on meeting their own school community needs, including students and their families, faculty and staff. Our athletics department in after-school works with both internal and external coaches throughout the school year. We've been revisiting how external partnerships can remain for high-quality programming for students while maintaining the health & safety of our community as the priority.
What will spring in-person sports look like?
Our spring athletics will have 3-4 core sports, with internal and external coaches
A sign-up survey will go out on Wednesday, April 21st. All interested students and their families will receive information regarding our new in-person physical activity guidelines, waiver/consent forms, and student behavioral contracts.
In-Person Core Club Highlights
Below are a few highlights of our in-person club offerings in our Hybrid Model. If your student is enrolled in the school's hybrid-learning model, they are welcome to join our ASP Hybrid Program. Please email our Program Office as soon as possible so we can add them to our cohort model & attendance rosters. We are accepting enrollment forms and providing the most updated information in our hybrid guide.

WTMS Day of Silence- April 15th & 16th
This Thursday, April 15th, or Friday, April 16th students will have the option to participate in GLSEN’s Day of Silence, ‘My Silence, My Story’.
The Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and allies all around the country—and the world—take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools. DOS Started in the mid 90’s by two college students, the Day of Silence has expanded to reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. Every April, students go through the school day without speaking, ending the day with Breaking the Silence rallies and events to share their experiences during the protest and bring attention to ways their schools and communities can become more inclusive.
WTMS’s Break the Silence Zoom event will be on Friday, 4/16 during the Shade Of Love Meeting @ 4PM.

Need to Know
Hello WTMS Families,
We hope you all had a much well-deserved fun and safe Spring Break.
New York State recently updated its guidance for the Math, English Language Arts (ELA), and Science state assessments will take place this April, May, and June to say that all state assessments will be opt-in for 2021. Prospect Schools families can opt-in to take the state test using this form but are not required to do so. You must let us know by April 15th if you would like your child to take the state test. Due to the quick turnaround time to prepare, we cannot be flexible with our deadline.
Please find the letters in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic below with an overview of the new guidelines.
If you DO NOT want your child to take the State Test this year, you DO NOT have to take any action.
Only families who DO want their child to take the State Test this year need to fill out the form.
We at Prospect Schools are committed to using assessments - both those we give at our schools and those we take through New York State - to inform, personalize and ensure quality instruction. This year, given the uniqueness of the pandemic, the US Department of Education, New York State, and Prospect Schools are all approaching these exams as one piece of our assessment system that can help inform planning for the fall. Individual student results will not be used for any promotion or placement decisions. Our internal data shows that we have done amazing work to surmount this year's obstacles and to ensure that students are learning the most important content. We are incredibly proud of our student's growth in this unprecedented year.
Some questions you may have, and their answers, are here in our FAQ section.

Holocaust Remembrance Day - 4/8
Between 1933 and 1945, the German government, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, carried out the systematic persecution of and murder of Europe’s Jews. This genocide is now known as the Holocaust. The Nazi regime also persecuted and killed millions of other people it considered politically, racially, or socially unfit. The Allies’ victory ended World War II, but Nazi Germany and its collaborators had left millions dead and countless lives shattered. The US Congress established Days of Remembrance as the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is responsible for leading the nation in observing Days of Remembrance and for encouraging observances throughout the United States. The internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. On the Day of Remembrance, the most important thing is to remember the humanity that is in all of us to leave the world better for our children, students, and for posterity.

We will be observing Jewish American Heritage Week during the month of April! S/O to WTMS Parent Dr. Tali Noimann for providing helpful resources for the planning of this week.
Ramadan - April 12 - May 12
Ramadan is a spiritual month for Muslims that is marked by special observations such as fasting and nightly prayer. This year in the New York area, Ramadan begins at sunset on Monday, April 12 and ends at sunset on Wednesday, May 12. Observation of the start and end dates may vary by one day depending on different locations and on different schools of thought within the Islamic tradition. The majority of Muslims in America will be observing Ramadan this year on the aforementioned dates. Ramadan is on a lunar calendar and moves up 11 days each year. Many practicing Muslims observe fasting and additional Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan. Fasting is typically observed by abstaining from food and water from dawn to sunset and is considered mandatory by many Muslims throughout the month of Ramadan. Taraweeh prayers last for approximately two hours every night during Ramadan and are generally considered to be highly recommended rather than mandatory.
For Families
Students seeking religious accommodations for their observation of Ramadan should contact their teachers as soon as possible.
If your student will be observing Ramadan please reach out to MSdeans@brooklynprospect.org so we can best support your student.

Updated NYS Travel Advisory Starting April 1st
Governor Cuomo is changing quarantine rules effective April 1st. Schools have not yet received guidance around what this means for students & schools in general. We're hoping to have that information soon to share with families but have been experiencing delays in communications from the city and state as they sort out what all of this looks like in a school setting. While quarantining is no longer required, it is recommended. Should you choose to quarantine, your student can be excused from in-person attendance if they are hybrid. Additionally, hybrid students who choose to quarantine will not be able to join remote classes due to the volume of requests we anticipate. We will be sending out further information regarding the type of asynchronous work we will be able to provide for those days.
Please click here for NYS Travel information.

NJHS' CANNED FOOD DRIVE
MARCH 22ND - APRIL 16TH
Our NJHS leadership club is kicking off a school-wide canned food drive! This initiative will take place from March 22nd through April 16th, excluding spring break. As we know, COVID has created more barriers in communities of high-risk populations. The burdens of this pandemic have been felt hardest by families in need. We are striving to make sure all of our families have access to any food supply, and we urge you to donate what you can. Donations will go to CHiPS, a 501(c)(3) that helps our neighbors struggling with hunger and homelessness in the Brooklyn community. Here's what you can bring in.
Hybrid Student Ask: Please bring canned food, pantry, or non-perishable item to your advisory period. As students bring these items into the building, they will be sanitized and placed in our donation boxes.
All Families Ask: Can we support with any food assistance? Please email our DSC, Dwight Thomas, or school counselor, Jessica Pina, and you'll receive a personal gift basket curated from our very own NJHS members! Our After-School Team will mail these anonymously home to our families who request support.

WOMXN’S HISTORY MONTH - Impactful Womxn Week - March 22-26
Impactful Womxn’s Week celebrates the accomplishments womxn have made in history and the further progress needed to continue the battle for equal rights. During this week, it is a time to commemorate the achievements of womxn in all fields. It is also a time to discuss politically the impact that womxn have been making in society and what aspects of culture need improvement. It’s a time to do research, learn about prominent figures and events in history, and is also a time to make impactful changes for the better consequentially. On a world-wide scale, many womxn still do not have the reasons that they deserve to be able to thrive in the world, and as a result, this week advocates women to strive for long-lasting solutions to benefit everyone as a whole. Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength. - G.D. Anderson.
We invite you to our Impactful Womxn Panel to join in on a conversation about the obstacles and triumphs womxn have faced in today's society.
Take care

Clarification on Attendance Policy
As a reminder, we are running two schools simultaneously - Hybrid In-Person and Remote Only. Because of this, you may see an “Absent” code in TeacherEase prior to 11 am when our attendance is finalized.

Upcoming Events & Recap
March Parent Engagement Event
March is Womxn’s History (...or Herstory) Month and we could not allow the month to pass by without an opportunity to celebrate the caregivers in our community who identify as womxn. On Monday, March 22, 2021 6:30-7:15pm we are offering a virtual Intensati/Yoga class for those who identify as womxn. Please register here. You may invite a friend, partner or your children, whether they identify as womxn or not, to join you.
Intensati is a high-intensity cardio class that combines positive affirmations with interval training. The affirmations in this session will focus on the contributions and power of women. We will do 20 minutes of Intensati and 25 minutes of Yoga. The class will be led by April Frazier, a former middle school educator who teaches students and adults how to use yoga, mindfulness, and fitness as a tool of self-empowerment, radical self-love, and social justice.
We look forward to celebrating those who identify as womxn and practicing self-care together! Please register here.
Weekend Wellness!
Families are invited to attend free, live-streamed “Weekend Wellness: Self-Care for Communities & Families” events from 10:30AM to 11:30AM on March 20 and April 24. The DOE, in partnership with Hip Hop Public Health, is hosting this series to raise awareness around self-care, physical, mental, and emotional health skills, and practices that our school communities need to be resilient, as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. These events are designed to be especially relevant for communities of color, who are experiencing disproportionate losses and health risks.
Women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, although to a lesser degree than in the past, with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science, and the physical sciences (NSF, Science & Engineering Indicators, 2016).
35.2% of chemists are women
11.1% of physicists and astronomers are women
33.8% of environmental engineers are women
22.7% of chemical engineers are women
17.5% of civil, architectural, and sanitary engineers are women
17.1% of industrial engineers are women
10.7% of electrical or computer hardware engineers are women
7.9% of mechanical engineers are women
Studies have found that middle school is when girls are most likely to become disinterested in the STEM subjects because they don’t think they “fit” what society deems the typical STEM student. Programs such as Girls Who Code, Pixel Academy, and Upperline Code show girls that they are just as able to succeed in these fields as anyone else. When women are not seen as equals to men in this field, it especially affects girls. Girls and young women don’t see role models to motivate themselves and see themselves in that position. They are undermined by the idea that this is a “man’s field” where girls don’t belong. This week WTMS is going to change those thoughts by introducing our students to some wonderful women in STEM!
